I Have Some Bad News

Civilization IV was not within IGN's top 100 video games ever made, and Civilization II was #3. huh

The video game in the #1 spot was Super Mario Bros.
Civilization IV sure runs like a dream on my new computer.

I'm inclined to agree with super mario bros at #1, however civ 4 should definately be in the top 100. I think its the best Civ game. huh

Lists like these are tough - even though games haven't been out all that long, there are so many genres that certain titles have just become iconic. Games like Ocarina of Time, Super Mario Bros, Final Fantasy VII, Civ 2....I could think of way more than 10 titles that "must" make any top ten list smile

The only really odd things I see (other than the oldest and most groundbreaking titles getting shafted) are surprisingly high scores for some games: Tie Fighter, Pirates!, and Shadow of the Colossus all seem to have done very well.

EDIT: Thanks for posting the entire list Swein, that was a helpful post.

Making one of these lists would be brutal... I would put Ocarina of Time ahead of all the Civ games (please don't hurt me), and putting Mario Brothers at first makes sense because of the influence it had, so the top of the list doesn't have any big complaints from me... Even though I'm not a fan of shooters since they're a bit bland, Halo should definitely be higher because it revolutionized multiplayer gaming. Thanks Swein for posting the full list, I saw the article on IGN but you had to click through them one at a time (no joke), so I figured I'd save a few hours of my life... The most notable game series (for me) missing from this list are any of the Age of Empires/Mythology games...

Sands of Tim at #68? That's sad.

Hi,

these lists are silly but fun. smile This list can't be serious though - there's no Diablo on it! smoke

And personally, I miss a lot of old titles there too. M.U.L.E, Rogue/Nethack, Star Raider or Lemmings not only were groundbreaking at their time but also still fun to play nowadays. At least Archon is listed at #100...

That would be Goldeneye, which is at a disgusting 75!!

Another thing I wanted to ask you guys is why you have moved on from Civ3 to Civ4; there's a hot discussion going on at Civfanatics and the diehard Civ3 fans seem to have good points.

Please respond to the list at the top as well as this question. wink

Because Civ4 is a much better game? smile

I've seen that discussion thread at CivFanatics, and it's mostly a lot of hot air. Whenever any new Civ game comes out, there's always a number of people who prefer to stick with what they know and refuse to move on to the new version. There's nothing wrong with that either; to each his own. When Civ3 came out, there was a small minority of snooty Civ2 fans that insisted that the new game was rubbish, and proudly declared that they were sticking with Civ2. It's very amusing for me to see that six years later, the exact same arguments that were used to attack Civ3 are now used to defend it. lol

Besides, we played Civ3 to death from 2001-2004. The game has a LOT of gameplay holes in it. Have you ever seen our exploits list? No one will ever be able to convince me that Civ4's gameplay is a step back from Civ3. And that's not just because I helped develop Civ4.
