Doh, I forgot where I read this, some confirmation that BNet/Diablo III will be free to play, BUT there might be different tiers of membership (hello hgl)... oh here it is ;p

Pricing for the game is still being decided, but don’t expect to pay subscription fees for access to Battle.net. Sure, there’s always the possibility that different membership tiers will be introduced later on, but nothing we heard during our chat suggested that the team has anything other than a free-to-play model in mind for Diablo III’s online play

I don't think the idea of "membership tiers" derives from anything Blizzard has said - just that it would not contradict what has been suggested (which is, this is a "retail box" and a fee will not be required.)
