Civ 4 Tech Tree

If you haven't seen it already, CivFanatics has released the complete (or almost) tech tree for Civ 4. Also, as you might know, there are multiple paths you may take. What will be the most favoured route? Will there be some specific "ToE" strategic route? (Atomic Theory and Electronics)? We can only wait. The release date is also set for October 24. See the tech tree here: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/techtree/

Getting to Banking in 6 techs?

Paper to Plastics in 7 techs (Paper or Plastic? smile )?

It will be interesting to see how the following works out:

Quote: You also don’t need all the techs that connect to the one you want. A connection to it is all that is needed.

Seems you could get to the end of the tech tree pretty quick I guess (in terms of # of techs - the tech cost would probably prevent you without Libraries/Unis).

I sincerely hope the quote about not having to discover all linking tech's isn't true because that's a bit lame, IMHO. I could see not having to research all tech's in an "age" as in Civ3, but even in Civ2 if you wanted soemthing like railroads for example, you had to research all the prereq's that would allow all the advances to culminate to that point.

If the quotes that people seem to throw around about not having to research all pre-req's is true then why even have a tech tree with linking lines drawn on it anyway? Just make an ordered list and have the prereq icons in the upper right as they are now. *shrugs*

I found the quote here at CFC, in the Pre-Release Info article - pretty reliable.

It says it is implemented so if you find out you are lacking iron or horses, you can 'skip' (literally, it seems) techs to get to gunpowder or such and make up for your lacking resources.

Well it seems good to me. It would probably foster a lot of trading, which is somehting I enjoy. With different civs racing down different braches of the tech tree i think trading will catch everyone up, so by the time you get to a tech such as railroads you will have most if not all of the earlier techs researched via trade. And of course with so many new resources in the game I am just really excited about quality peaceful trader games.

Just to be clear guys on the "skipping" of tech in Civ 4 here is a quote directly from the CFC

"Even with evenly spaced-out resources it can happen that in the early game a player may not always have a resource such as iron or horses. The tech-tree also balances that out should it happen. It makes it easy for the player to switch strategies and head in the direction of Gunpowder (for example)."

It seems to imply that the lack of a resource on this more flexible tree means that you can advance to the next "paradigm" in weaponry without having to finish an entire age worth of tech first. Thus reducing the amount of time you must survive with out dated weapons.

I see no where in that pre-info section where you can skip required technologies.

I do see where it says you can beeline to something like gunpowder if you're msising horses or iron without having to research everything of that "era" as in Civ3. Again, the way it's sounding to me is like Civ2 technology, not Civ3 with it's "ages".

Right, that's the impression I had as well. THis -doesn't- mean you can skip pre-req's needed to advance along the path to a future tech, it just means you don't have to research 'everything' as in Civ3.

Unless someone has played Civ1 or Civ2 they wouldn't understand the concept, which is probably why there is so much confusion.

If the developers want to keep resources prminent and worth while then why would they want to allow people to not even have to research things that are built with them? Also, why would they link the tech's at all if they meant for them to be skippable (to counter the "not all pre-req's are required" mentality that seems to pervade the various forums on this issue.)

Sorry, I didn't mean "skip", I meant you could beeline to Gunpowder or such, bypassing other techs. You do only need 1 prerequisite though.
