Attention ATI Graphics Card Owners!

Installing DirectX from the Civ4 discs is ESSENTIAL. Remember, this installation step is essential even if you think you already have DirectX 9c installed.

A fresh install of the latest Catalyst drivers (5.10) is also essential.

If you follow these steps and still have problems, please reply to this thread with your details. Thanks.

The data in this post is coming from Civ4's Lead Programmer:

----------------------------------------
Here are the latest ATI drivers:

# Radeon® display driver 8.18
# Catalyst™ Control Center version 5.10

1. ATI recommends Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher to be installed.
2. You must have Microsoft .NET Framework installed prior to downloading and installing the CATALYST Control Center
3. The Catalyst Uninstaller is an optional download. We recommend using this utility to uninstall any previously installed Catalyst drivers prior to installation.

ALSO... If this does not fix your issues, then please visit this thread:

This will explain how to get the Firaxis utility to decompress the Art PAK file, which seems to solve the issue for almost everybody who still has a problem after ensuring they have the correct installation of Drivers and DirectX.

It still doesn't work for me. I've spent the past 9 hours working on it and my brain is fried. I've done every suggestion made by Soren, Trip, and the other Firaxians (who have been very helpful by the way), but unfortunately to no effect. Hopefully they'll get it solved tomorrow so I can enjoy this amazing game.

Here is my dxdiag log in any event:

Thanks, Speaker. (Sorry about the hassles!)

I feel like I can relate to what the President keeps reiterating on a certain topic: "We have to get it right 100% of the time. They only have to get it right once and it's a disaster." Arrgh!

I'll keep everybody here posted as to status of the issue.

Good luck with those ATI card's everyone.. ATI and their crappy (at the time) drivers and all the issues I had trying to run NWN 4 years ago made me switch to nVidia and I haven't looked back since. smile

What good is having a great piece of hardware (ATI) when only about 1 out of 4 driver version would work on my system and/or cause it to -not- crash. After having to roll back through 5 previous versions of their drivers to find a stable one, and then never upgrading, I grew tired of their ineptitude.

Not to mention many more developers seem to tweak their games to work better, or at least they did, on nVidia than ATI.

Hi,

just a short note that not *every* system with an ATI card will refuse to run the game. I have an AMD 3400+ processor and an ATI Radeon 9800SE graphics card, and the game runs fine.

Maybe it's the ATI card/mainboard combination that causes problems with some systems? FWIW, I have VIA VT8383 Apollo K8T800 northbridhge and a VIA VT8237 Southbridge.

For those ATI Radeon card owners (Speaker et al.) for whom the game won't run: Have you tried the inofficial Omega drivers instead of the Catalyst drivers? The Omega drivers have solved problems for me in the past, so maybe they will help here, too? (For me, the Catalyst drivers work fine with Civ 4). Good luck!

It may also help to rollback through the various Catalyst drivers to see if you can find one that works with the game as well. I've had to do that in the past when installing an old 8500 card before. I think I had to roll back to the driver that was about 6 versions older than the most current version before I found one stable enough to keep from crashing the PC and would allow the game (Ghost Recon in this case) to work properly.

All else fails, remove the driver completely from the OS, and then shut down and remove/reseat the card and see if that works.

My ATI Sapphire 9600 PRO (Ultimate Ed) with AMD Athlon XP 2500 works fine as well (even with the old Catalyst 05.7 drivers). DirectX 9.0cwas installed during initial loading of Civ4, not sure if this has something to do with my succees. My MB is a Asus A7N8X Deluxe (nVidia nForce2 chipset)
Reply

Hmm, I wonder if those who are having problems would cease to have them if they rolled back to an older version of the Catalyst drivers?
