Tourney Question

Ok, i have browsed through the rules but didnt really figure it all out. Maybe a little help please.

Is this tourney online or is it single player? If it is single player, is the point to get the highest CiV score using the same settings? And if it is online, is it 1v1 2v2 2vCPU?

I am just trying to figure out what the format is for the tournament.

Also, is this patch something official thats being released?

I'm not a tourney organizer, so I could be mistaken, but here's my impression.

The patch will indeed be an official Firaxis patch. We aren't much into mods here, as a rule, though that may change some with Civ4 (we'll see.)

Assuming things are holding true to how they've worked in the past, the Epics will be single player games. Scoring may be based on the Civ scoring formula for some but probably not very many if any games. Not all games are scored, and those that are usually have customized scoring conditions for that game which will be posted when the game is announced. I imagine there could be opportunities to try out cooperative (or perhaps even competitive) multiplayer in the Adventures series.

I really like the idea of a 2-player co-op Adventure game and will be very willing to sponsor it once we get going (after Sirian gives us the games he's been waiting to create for months that is wink )

Welcome!

It looks like the basics are covered, but I wanted to say that the "point" of any tournament game is more than just the scoring. We tend to focus a lot more on reports, discussions, and comparisons than we do on results.

That said, each game does have a Scenario Concept that helps to focus the challenge. Sometimes a game is also scored, butsometimes we just ask participants to follow the rules and their interests and to let us know what happened.

I think that gives players more opportunities to distinguish themselves, not less. Hopefully you will give it a try!

If you have time, you might want to look over some of the scenarios for our Epics tournament for Civ3.

Hope that helps,

Hi,

It works like this: The sponsor (Sirian for the first game) will publish a single player save game, most of the time from 4000BC but not always. The sponsor also announces the settings of the game and maybe sets additional rules, like that you're not allowed to have more than 5 cities, or that you may not trade for techs. Additionally, either the game is unscored, which means that playing, reporting and discussing the game is the main focus, or it is scored, in which case the sponsor announces how it will be scored. That can be the in-game score, but it can also be any different scoring mechanism, like who has the most spices in 1500AD, who is the first to launch the spaceship, or more complex scoring mechanisms (see the old Epic 36 for Civ 3, for example).

Now everybody plays the game without talking about it. No spoilers! That's one of the most important rules here (in addition to no cheating!). On report day, usually 3-6 weeks after the game was announced, everybody reports about his/her game, compares the game to other's, and (if needed) the winner is determined.

Initially, Sirian had planned to open up the first tournament game as soon as the Civ 4 was out, but it looks like a lot of people are unable to run the program because of a technical bug, so we're waiting until Firaxis has released a patch which fixes said bug so that more players can participate.

Hope to see you then! smile

The games I've been "waiting to create" won't show up for a while. Players have to learn the game first! The early events will be fairly simple affairs. smile
