Epic One - Regoarrarr's (sad, sad) report

http://www.regoarrarr.com/civ/replay.php?story=3

Short story - I conceded defeat in 220 BC after dropping down to 1 city. Learned a thing or two though

Not sure where I'm supposed to submit my save though (if I still have it)

Yeah, you can get by without Archery -OR- you can get by without the metals -OR- you can get by without horses. But trying to go without all three is suicide. You absolutely need some kind of a good unit, be that archers or chariots or axemen or something. Warriors simply will not cut it for too long. A BUNCH of warriors fog-busting, fortified on forested hills, will slow the barbs significantly, but the AIs (especially ultra-aggressive foes like Monte and Genghis next to you) will smell the chum in the water and come attack.

Thanks for sharing the report! Have fun reading the others!

It is possible to survive 4000 years with only a couple of warriors, but you have to be extremely carefull diplomatically and use Woodsmen fortified on Jungle hills in the wilderness to distract barbarian archers. Especially effective was a Woodsman II on a jungle hill near barbarian city.

By being carefull diplomatically I mean:
- no religion (hence no religious tensions)
- expanding away from neighbors (no border tensions) - having no direct border also makes it less likely that they will declare war
- cancelling open borders with all their enemies (Indians and Americans) - no chance for them to demand cancellation of trade deals

That allowed me to survive until late BCs/early ADs with only 3 or 4 warriors for protection, at which point I use my Alphabet to buy Iron Working and started training Axemen and Swordsmen.
