Funny thing about some really good games. It seems like no one else I know has ever played them. However, now with the power of the intertubenets, there HAS to be someone who knows what I'm talking about.
One of my favorite games (as I was never into Diablo) was Nox by Westwood Studios which you can pick up here: http://www.gog.com/game/nox.
It is basically a Diablo clone but not exactly. First of all, it is a lot less random than Diablo because drops and XP typically don't change much between playthroughs if you remember to kill everything and get all the secrets. Second, it plays more like Torchlight with 3 unique classes that are completely different. Third, you tend to get one shot really really really often (especially by the friggin vampires with 1 shot KO warhammers in the final dungeon) so it is like the typical dungeon runner but on steroids.
It actually feels a lot like Castlevania with Torchlight gameplay.
Oh yeah and each class gets different maps and quests in each section of the game. :D
There was also a kickstarter for Nox 2.
