[SPOILERS] AlaePB1 - Furungy & C++

Hello, World!

Nice to see you in my reporting thread. Here are some interesting points about me and my goals in that game.

I'd like to post some words about me and my background. So, first of all this is my 1st attempt to play Civilization IV. I have no time and motivation to play with AI, but at the same time I have found it interesting to fight in multiplayer mode. The good news are:
  1. I have some solid background in Civilization series game. I was fond of playing 1st Civilization, Civilization Call To Power and Alpha Centauri.
  2. I have seen introductory Sulla's videos. His gameplay with Willem will be much helpful in that game.
  3. I'm the very skilled programmer. I'll grow my C++ application during this game to calculate optimal tiles utilization. You will see some code listings later. More over, I think that to have an easy to use application with a rich Civilization IV domain model is my primary goal for that game.

Opponents

Although Gaspar ranks Gavagai as a 5th tier player, he is a favorite in that Pitboss. 2nd is Bacchus, but I'll try to beat his Excel spreadsheets with my C++ app. Alexander is my colleague at work. I think we are both outsiders here. I have nothing to say about other players.

Welcome and good luck!

No Civ4 experience is surely a challenge, but if you do a proper amount of reading/studying it's not impossible to do well without prior game knowledge.. (Sulla's videos are surely a good way to start learning and lot of important concepts are demonstrated there). As you know in civ you always need to have some kind of vision how your future is going to look like so lot of effort is probably needed.. popcorn

Your 3. bullet is interesting. I've sometimes thought about building an own optimization tool for civ4, but have never found time for it. The game is just so complex that building a tool that truly helps in decision making is quite a task. Looking forward to see that too tongue

Pitboss server is shutted down now and I cann't show actual screenshots for T39. The only I have are North map for T34 and South map for T37. But there were no much changes there. Let's see them.

Here you can see my 1st challenge - the horses. I have no them on my core land and that is why I delayed The Wheel -> Pottery in favor of Sailing. Yeh, that is very bad, especially because my leader is FIN, but I'll feel my self much safer with chariots than with early cottages. There are another reasons for this decision as well:
  1. Because I should not grow cottages right now I can whip very aggressively.
  2. My 3rd city on the 1N tile from the clam will work two great 3-commerce clam and fish tiles, so no cottages required for it ASAP.
  3. My 4th (may be 5th) city will be coastal city near the 3 tiles lake. It will not a junk city only if it will have a lighthouse.
Motivations for Utrecht placement are very simple:
  1. It can share already improved tiles with wheat and riverside mine with capital.
  2. It should have enough size (3 or more) when cottages will be available.
  3. It can trade with Amsterdam right now via river.
  4. It is very close to capital.

Thanks for reading!
Of course the app will not make decisions right now - only simple calculations. At the end of the game I hope to have good enough domain model to help me produce citys' building queues just in time. Programming simple decision making will be possible during next Pitboss : )

The North

Here you can see what did I mean when noted about the 3rd city with clam and fish tiles. As I said before it will on the hill 1N from the clam. Unfortunately 4th city cann't be coastal and have nice 3/0/3 lake tiles and work wheat at the same time. So I decided to make it coastal massive commerce city. The wheat will work the most north city with fish and spices. The open question which city is which city should be founded before...

Just quick feedback. All the above 4 things make sense to me thumbsup But did you have a reason why you did not settle 1 tile north in order to get gold into BFC too.. mischief

Anyways, early demos never tell too much, but they do look good, so keep up the good work.

So when do you intend to settle for horses/get a galley out?
