Heya all and it's good to see such activity!!
Been playing some CivIV since christmas (gotta love a wife who buys you Civ!!!) and after a few games at Prince and lower to learn the mechanics I've done a few runs on Monarch with mixed results.
Playing as the chinese (Kubli) I scratched and fought my way to a space race victory and that was all well and good. Started on a conti with 4 others.
However the PRNG was somewhat odd with the other three. In each I started alone on a fair size chunk of land and despite my best efforts I got completely smoked... (One with Freddy I must admit was a great game but my opening was intended to be aggressive and when forced to switch tracks I had lost too much time)
In all the games I survived and finished middle of the pack but by the time of first contact (always the AI meeting me, getting to optics by oneself is a damn slow process) I was hugely behind tech wise despite often being the largest Civ with a decent eco. Is this to be expected? The inability to trade techs with anyone seems a mammoth handicap. In addition the inability to trade anything but tech for tech (from a practical standpoint) seems somewhat limiting especially from the POV of staging a comeback.
Loving the game so far. Kudos to Sullla and Sirian for their contributions to a great game!!
Sweet gaming moment......
My third game of CivIV. Prince diff and I was playing as Washington. Default size and settings. I was on a Conti with Ceaser and Cath. I was researching mil trad for Cav and in anticipation was stocking up on cash and Knights to go beat on Rome. (He had twice chosen unwisely) I had no horses (Cath had 3!! and was pleased with me) and was trading a couple of Luxes to her for them. The instant I dinged the tech she dialed me up and cancelled the trade and her price for them was prohibitive. I sat back and thought... damn......DAMN!!!!! My whole plan up in smoke. The realization that the AI would realise the danger and cut me off was great!!
It was a pity that when I asked for them out of friendship she immediately agreed. Rome was gone and when she out of the blue attacked me (guess she was concerned about my size because we were great friends at that point) she was gone soon after.
Still though, that few seconds after she cancelled the horses was a sweet gaming moment. I almost got mad at an AI!!
