Truly, RB PB #20 will be the most deadly game yet....

About myself. Long time listener, first time caller. Like many people, I know about Realms Beyond because of Sulla's charming game reports, but didn't realize there was still an active multiplayer community here until just recently. I read Seven Spirit's thread from PB16 and became extremely excited to play a game here. As far as my experience goes, I played a fair bit of MP Civ4 many years ago, but as the scene died its just been single-player and lots of SG for me. I have played a LOT of those though. While I have pretty good confidence in my micro and game knowledge, I'll have to rely on my game sense and instincts from other multiplayer games to win here.
I think the Tides of War mod is pretty interesting. As far as Seven Spirits' two goals, balancing the game with as minimal changes as possible + shaking up the current metagame goes, he did a very good job. It almost feels like a 3rd expansion, were it to come packaged with an extra dozen scenerios or something like that. Thus, for picks, I'm gonna try to go with something in spirit of testing out the mod - at the very least, a leader with at least one of Agr/Pro/Cha/Imp, or something weird like a Compass-rush if I go with a Fin. I guess the thing to do next would be to go through all the changes, blab on for paragraph after paragraph about Financial this, Productive that, yadda yadda yadda ??? Maybe start with the traits and then everything else?? More concrete plans about the game would be premature before seeing the start. Any more questions about me? What do y'all want me to post about next?

Welcome to RB.
I'd like to hear a newcomer vet's thoughts on the RB metagame, what's hot and what's not about our current group think.
I have to run.
Joey and I have been playing SGs on another site (a general gaming / chat board) for a while now and have really enjoyed reading the Pitboss reports here, especially Sullla's. His slam-dunk evisceration of Civ5 got passed around on the board we originate from and is still posted whenever someone pops up to ask "is Civ5 any good with the latest expansion?"
As for what the 'new blood' might think, the big thing I notice from reading Pitboss reports is that there seems to be a huge player skill disparity in almost all of these games. For instance, I just finished reading through all of the PB16 drama, which was immensely entertaining, and it seemed obvious that nobody in that game had a chance to win except for Sullla or SevenSpirits, and SevenSpirits having just one inferior competitor on his continent made it pretty much a sure thing. He's obviously a damn good player, but after reading both his thread and Sullla's, those guys really should not have been in the same game with some of the other players. Oh, and we are not smurfs.
Joey is a much better civ4 player than I, yet I will do my best to mercilessly torment his every mistake and blunder.
Welcome! Looking forward to your game!
There certainly are players with very different skill sets and experience playing in Pitbosses, but I just wan't to comment that actually I don't think that the skill disparity in PB16 was thaaaat big (nothing away from Seven though - I'm not sure what to think of Sullla's game, because he quit a bit too early). One game is always a small sample and I think there were several players who did not quite manage to show their A-game or things just did not develop their way. I did not follow the game too closely, but Commodore, Gaspar+Noble, Gavagai and wetbandit come quickly to mind. Also IIRC retep played well in PB11 so if Seven would not have succeeded in his early rush I think he would have been in for a tough game and challenge. PB12 on the other hand is an example where Serdoa+team mates were pretty dominant throughout the whole game, so I agree with your general statement to some extent :P |
