Realms Beyond - Game types

Forgive me for my utter noobness, but despite reading about the rules and spirit of RB, I still don't understand the differentiation between epics and adventures. For some reasons, the epics "seem" to have a greater level of status attached to them, though that perhaps is just my perception.

But how do they differ? By gamespeed alone? But how does the difference between a normal and epic game compare to the difference between games on warlord and monarch? A change of tactics is required, for sure, but that's true for Adventure 1 through 4, too.

After all, everyone plays the same game. The rules are the same for everyone. Why not a game on Quick or Marathon? Or an adventure on Epic speed?

Does it have to do with the amount of preparation by the game sponsor? Assuring a desired "experience", that is dependant on the game speed?

Sadly, I missed Epic One, but according to my hall of fame I've played 3 of my five games on epic. Just goes to show how much I suck; I didn't even notice a difference lol

For Civ3, there was only the (Civ3) Epics. We ran fifty events, and through the entire run, I administrated the tournament within a certain scope. There are formula concepts behind the choices of difficulty levels, challenge levels, civs chosen, map sizes, land types, variants, scoring, etc. We mix it up quite a bit, but there are certain principles that guide the bigger picture. There is a center around which I navigate, with a lean away from the center in one direction soon followed by a lean in the other direction.

The first thing for any leader to learn is not to mess with success. The things that are working for you, you keep doing them.

Civ4 is a bigger game than Civ3. The Epics will cover the same territory they always have, but that will no longer cover the whole game. The Adventures cover what the Epics do not. Since that is how I have defined them, that is how many players think of them. You are welcome to think of them in any way you please, though. For some, the Epics will be of lesser interest, and the Adventures (or some of them) will be the prized events. That's fine.

A game is a game. An Adventure will not look all that different from an Epic, taken in isolation. It's when you examine the totality of the games, their settings, scenarios, etc, that the difference will be noticeable.

By any chance were those 3 games from before the latest patch? I've got a couple entries in my hall of fame from before the patch that I know were on normal, but the game thinks were on epic. Also, the game thinks epic 1 was on marathon.

Ah, a grand plan smile The epics are the road, the adventures are little detours. Intriguing nod

Dude, where's my car?

On a slighty related side note, and only a very minor nitpick, Adventure 2 is listed under 'Completed Epics' under the list of games.

Thanks for the nit. Some things I do by autopilot, and apparently I was moving completed games around on the page the same way I used to do it for our Civ3 tournament. lol
