What do the lines on the wands in the magic screen mean?

What do these lines mean? Some are gold lines and some are brown lines.

I believe it is pure decoration.
But, the solid chunks of gold at the bottom of each wand are the visual representation of the percentages of your generated mana allocation (coming from fortress, population of some races, buildings, controlled resources, nodes, etc.) to the 3 spending areas.
