Windows 10

This morning, I logged on to my computer and noticed a "get Windows 10" button prominently displayed on my toolbar. The release date is July 29, according to CNet, and the upgrade button is really a "reserve your copy for when we actually finish the software" button.

Reviews seem to be positive so far, so I expect that I'll accept their offer of a free copy of the latest and greatest OS.

Why would you need to "reserve a copy" when in all likelihood everybody will have to download the upgrade from Microsoft's server anywway?

Windows 10 looks certainly better than Windows 8; however depending on what you do, it may be prudent to wait a bit to see if all drivers/updates are working properly with the new OS.

From the way it's described, "reserving a copy" appears to mean that the installer will download automatically once it's available, then the user will be prompted to run the installer. It reminds me of Windows Update, where everything happens in the background. The less burden you put on the end user, the better. Most people probably didn't even know Windows 10 was coming and have no idea how to download and run an installer.

Good point. I remember people complaining bitterly about driver issues with Windows 8. I have old hardware and low demands, so I don't expect much trouble.

I like to let other people test MS products before I take the plunge myself. About three years is normally sufficient to iron out the bugs. mischief

Download speed. Once you reserve it pre-downloads components as they're finished, so you don't have to download the full install alongside millions of other folks on launch day.

nod

I don't necessarily need three years, but I'm going to wait a while all the same. I'd rather spend my downtime playing games than fixing problems on my home system.

According to all the press, Windows 7 and 8.1 users have a year to download and install Windows 10 for free. I intend to wait myself to see if there are any glaring bugs, but as long as there aren't, will probably not delay too long. No love for 8.1 here.

I won't be downloading it immediately, but so long as the initial buzz isn't "OMFG this is as bad as Win 8.1" then I'll happily replace Win 8.1 with something less annoying.
