Not sure I agree with Rome for paladin, people are getting too caught up with what they would have clued. Plus I don't see the knight / church connection as that strong myself

I agree especially as the paladins of old were connected to the emperor not to Rome.

They almost touched on it with hand, but instead of Rome you could say hand because an awful lot of Paladins in DND follow helm who was a gauntlet as his sign.

There was a real group who called themselves paladins? Which emperor? Charlemagne?

Not a group specifically.

But palatinus was a name given to persons close to the emperor in roman time.

Later palatinate referred to parts of the HRR where the Emperor stayed during his reigning on horseback = part time centres of the Empire.

The HRE emperor. IIRC it was later than Charlemagne, like the 1100s 1200s and 1300s

I knew that fact, but none of the context. Didn't even register that Palatinate and Paladin were etymologically related, even though it seems obvious now that's it's been pointed out to me.

Dragon paladin is a thing in hearthstone too.
Maybe Commodore was worried about miscueing a chess word with knight. India(n) maybe.
