Looking for Civ4 PBEM or Succession Game

I've never played Civ4 with others, but I'd like to change that. Is anyone interested in a PBEM or succession game? A slow turn pace wouldn't bother me.

I'm usually up for SGs, they hit a sweet spot of not too much constant commitment and interaction that I like.

Any specific theme or variant that you are interested in? Learning game, challenge, or wacky variant?

I'm tentatively interested as well. I'm unable to play Pitboss right now because of connectivity issues on my civ computer, but I should hopefully be able to participate in a Succession Game or a slow-paced PbeM, depending on settings. (Note faster-paced games are less likely to lose momentum though.)

I'm interested in a new PBEM. Not sure I've played a succession game, unless you count the PBEM74 mini-tournament.
PBEM12 - Shaka of Inca [6/6*] PBEM18 (Apps) - Augustus of China [4/4*] PBEM31 - Hannibal of Greece [jnt2-4/5*] PBEM72 - Willem of Oranje - Dutch [3/4*] PBEM74A -Catherine of Babylon [4/4][*ended early]

A succession game isn't a PBEM. It's a single-player game where each player plays one turnset in order (eg first player plays turns 0-19, second plays 20-29, third 30-39, and so on). After each turnset the turnplayer gives a report on what they've done and the state of the game, and often the players discuss the goals for the next turnset as well. It's an old and hallowed tradition here and on CFC, with plenty of varieties.

In particular, I'd like to learn skills that translate well from single-player to multi-player -- worker management (including such strategic decisions as when to tech for Guilds/Chemistry/Caste workshops), city dot-mapping, build queue management and specialization, optimal use of civics (in particular Slavery and Caste System), deciding when and what to chop, etc.

A variant whose goals and restrictions apply rather late, e.g. in the Industrial era (something related to Corporations, perhaps?), could serve to keep the endgame entertaining and the early game (which is always fun) educational with all options for optimal play on the table.

Another variant I've had in mind was to play with an AI partner (set to a lower difficulty such as Prince/Monarch) against three opposing teams of Immortals, or similar. mischief

For the map script, I'd favour a varied climate with a peculiar geography (that is, no Great Plains or Rainforest, but Hub would be fine).

I haven't yet decided whether to play a PBEM or SG. The former appears most exciting, and some competitive pressure helps with learning, but if I get eliminated or simply outmatched early, I'd miss out on many areas of empire management I want to improve upon.

Strategic discussion with team-mates as the game progresses is another big draw for me, and why I'm tempted to swing towards the SG. That and because I might drop off the radar in summer for my studies (the courses I'm taking span two semesters, resulting in rather monstrous exams which may not leave me with time to play); a SG could still continue without problems, a PBEM would have to find a replacement.

Playing an MP game (PBEM or PB) with an experienced dedlurker/teammate is probably the best way to improve

I feel there's some truth in this - in the recent SG, the awful decision making of the AI, particularly when it came to tech choices, made the victory easier than I'd expected. There's a limit to how much you can improve your play against such opposition. It was still fun though!

I think an SG can be good experience.  It helps to get used to the whole business of playing with other people's eyes on you, and may be even better than an MP game for getting used to reporting and communication (these are not compulsory for MP, I guess, but I think they're important). If it's combined with a challenge, or a step up in difficulty from what you're used to, I think an SG can be a chance to learn. At the very least, teammates and lurkers can throw ideas out you wouldn't have considered yourself.

I'm out of things for the moment - I'm probably not going to even have Internet access for much of the next month, while travelling - so I've been avoiding commitments. There is, of course, a new PB getting started, with at least one other comparative greenhorn playing, but I can understand not wanting to have to get to grips with a mod, and MP, and PB (which seems to be more of a time commitment than a PBEM, perhaps just because they tend to be bigger?) all at once.

If you do you get something going, I'll look forward to reading the thread(s) when I get back.

Yeah, SGs and PBEMs are fundamentally different creatures.

Anyway, since PBEMs require more commitment but also start regularly, it might be an idea to hop into the next one, either as a player or a dedlurker. SGs are more uncommon nowadays, so if you want one it might be better to start it yourself. I'm willing to help out to decide on parameters and to play, and it sounds like RefSteel is to.

I am down to only one PBEM now so would be interested in playing another (Quick speed only). Not sure I have any interest in an SG.
