Hey guys, figured I'd welcome myself to the community. I used to play Civ 4 back in the day with my friends over LAN, I recently got it again and have been playing against AI for a couple weeks now. I tried to go online to try and find some games and I found out that gamespy isn't a thing anymore (way late to the party, I know) and that's basically how I ended up finding this great site. Obviously I'm a complete noob with what you guys have going on here but I managed to get all set up to start playing Civ 4 with you guys (at least I think I'm all set). I want to try out a Pitboss, I already posted it over there on the pb38 thread (hope I'm not too late!). I'm hoping maybe some of you can show me the ropes on how everything works around here, it's still all a bit confusing to me. If anyone wants to set up a quick pbem with me some time in the recent future I'd really appreciate it to be able to start getting the hang of things and relearn how to play against real people. Thanks!
Newbie Here! :)

Welcome TBTL !
If you want to learn, I encourage you to team up with someone for PB38. I expect that a new PBEM will start reasonably soon, so you'll have a chance to play by yourself soon.
While we are on the topic of Newbies in a Pitboss game. I've also wanted to try it, but I'm not sure if have enough time on my hand. How much of a time investment is this mode. I know that one game can take 1 year or longer, but how much time do I have to invest on a daily basis and how do people distribute this time across a day? And how do you people handle longer holidays like christmas?
Mods: RtR CtH

And how do you people handle longer holidays like christmas? The amount of time required will vary greatly from one player to the next. I think a fairly common time in game after the very early turns where there is not much to do would range from 10-15 minutes to maybe 30 for a more complicated set of turns. For late game empires that are very large and where the conflict is widespread you can expect an hour to do it properly. I've had many turns take longer but this is an aberration and probably unique to the game that I was playing (PB18, 32 players, I had well over 100 cities by the end with lots of war turns). PB 38 will eventually require a significant time commitment from whoever ends up in a leading position by the end game given the high number of players. If you are concerned about time commitment I suggest getting a teammate. This will help tremendously, as well as helping you to improve your performance by having someone to bounce ideas off of.
There's a thing called a "dedicated lurker" that only reads one persons thread (thus keeping 'enemy' game knowledge spoiler free.) It's basically making yourself a teammated even if you're not actually playing, in that you can make suggestions or whatever. The main player could ask you to play turns when they're unavailable as well. That's a very low-key, low-time commitment way to "play".
If you feel over your head, you can just read, and if you've got some great ideas, sometimes the main player even changes and you could volunteer to take over the driver's seat.
