My picks:
1. Russia - Arguably the best civ and the one of the best that I want to try the most. Discounted early districts are Imba, obviously gets one of the 2 first religions (so either JE or Choral, both of which would be incredible) 2. Aztecs - Interesting. I imagine a world where I abuse jaguars and the district rushing ability of builders. 3. Japan - Cheap Districts, interesting and flexible stuff. 4. Brazil - For the Motherland! 5. Gorgo of Greece - As if Brasil would have been taken. Russia is my main choice, I'd really like to play with them, so they get position 1. I'm debating moving my dear Pedro II of Brazil to second place, due to my pride to my country. We'll see. If I don't say anything else, this is my final list, so you can go ahead and use that, if everyone else already picked.
If you get Russia your theme should be bleak/grim/black humor.
Dark Ichabod a go!

To celebrate, I'm going to the movies on a first date this saturday, and we'll be watching Grave of the Fireflies, a tragic movie about brother and sister struggling in the final moments of the Second World War in Japan. Let's get the "everyone dies in the end" into "tragedy" once again! Yay, we got Russia. Russia is a powerhouse in this game. It's the only base game Civ with a discounted early district, which means a diligent player can basically get almost all his districts at a discount. This is massive and we'll be using that a lot, hopefully (we can see that Krill has the same idea).
Russia also has first dibs on religion, which is great. There's only 2 civs that can beat Russia to a religion, being China and Japan with Divine Spark (which might happen here, but I doubt it). And Russia gets a highly synnergistic game winning package now that Choral Music was introduced. Basically, you beeline Cossacks and Theocracy, using Lavras to get Culture through Choral Music and building discounted Campi in prime adjacency places (which is helped by the great trait of bigger borders) - I'm not sure going to Education and Universities makes sense on a Cossack beeline, even when there's a 2 Uni Eureka on the way. That's why Choral Music trumps Jesuit Education - you want faith to buy the cossacks, so you can't afford to spend elsewhere. Plan right to get a proper GG, perhaps bought with faith, and no one can stop the Cossack army. Anyway, that's the gist of the plan. Opportunity might present itself as well, we'll see. Rome is likely the only Civ that rivals Russia in pure power (baring the banned ones) and Japan likely can do something interesting, as no doubt Krill is planning to. Problem with Japan is that they lack a I win button (cossack) and that Camps and Theater Districts are not the best districts to have discounted and spammed, especially with Russia acting as a counter pick.
Ichabod say as it is.
Arabia is overrated, IMO. The religion boost is anti-synnergistic, because you don't want to wait for the free prophet and you need Holy Sites for your boosts anyway. The Mamluk heal is how much per turn? 5HP in foreign lands? It's not as relevant as it would seem, although it looks pretty. In the end, nothing here really helps you win the game. Germany is also a bit lacking, compared to what people seem to think. The extra military slot is the best part. Industrial Zones are SP feel-good trash, so is the Hansa. I hardly see IZ paying back their costs until the end of the game, and the hansas only make that a bit better. And to make Hansas any good, you need Commercial Hubs and that means no HS and Campi. People already know that you don't produce anything through natural hammers in Civ 6, baring early game and Capital (where Hansas don't help that much). You chop and overflow and you buy with gold (upgrades) and faith. And the final nail on the coffin is that IZs need 2 other districts to be avaiable, so you can't get a discount chain as easily and timely. And bonus strength against CSs is not needed at all, if you know what you are doing. By the way, Singaboy early lead in PBEM 4 has more to do with the imbalanced starting position he had (sugar plus forested hill deer, for 2 5-yields) and his skill advantage over part of the field. Those choices are obviously better than the unpowered stuff, but it's not close to Rome and Russia. Japan is... Interesting. I think Krill will have some things to say before this game ends. |
