"Into the Breach" released (from the creators of FTL)

I just wanted to point out that the game "Into the Breach" has been released on Steam and GOG. The game was mady by the developers of "FTL", so I thought this might be interesting to some people. smile

Thanks for posting this, Gustaran. I have been interested in this one, as I enjoyed FTL a lot and it sounds like my sort of game.

There are plans:

Into the Breach will be initially available on Windows. After release we intend to bring the game to Mac and Linux as well. As a small studio, we found managing that large of a release for FTL very difficult, so we’re going to spread it out more this time. We will consider the possibility of bringing the game to Mobile devices and/or consoles in the future, but it is not a priority at this time.

Working in the industry myself, I can't say I blame them in the least.

People do have it working on OSX (using an emulator):

I have to admit after playing it a bit I don't quite understand the hype. It seems to me this is basically an 8x8 puzzle game. It's not bad, especially considering the price, but I feel the whole "storyline", atmosphere and management between battles in FTL were much more compelling.

The non-battle portions of the game do seem rather uninspiring. frown And maybe I am just having poor luck, but reactor cores seem to be rarer than unobtainium. I have several spare pilots and weapon/special upgrades so far, all of which require multiple power cores to actually use, and only a couple cores. "Look at all the shiny upgrades you can't actually use! And all the upgrade slots on your mechs that require more power cores than you can even imagine having!" rolleye

And while it is nice that you can preserve one pilot's experience to a new timeline, it does not really seem to mean much. My main pilot hit max level after just one cycle (he had the bonus XP per kill attribute) so it is not like it is preserving something that was all that hard to get. The few precious cores that I had managed to accumulate were (of course) lost.

Cruised to victory in 3 hours.

This is not FTL, which I would give a 9/10. This is more a 6/10.

A bit of fun, but not something to be hyped over.

It is a puzzle/tactical game, not a roguelike.

Would not recommend it.

There is quite a lot of stuff to unlock with alternate squads and such; I am just beginning to dig into all of it. I agree that the game has a strong puzzle flavor to it, rather than being rogue-like; whether that is a positive or negative depends on how much you like puzzles. Overall this one has not grabbed me nearly as strongly as FTL did, but there is fun to be had

I must need to go watch some lets plays because I'm not having that easy of a time on hard mode.
