Civ on Mac

So I thought I might get back into Civ again after a long hiatus.  When last we spoke, I had played quite a bit of Civ 4 with RB Mod and had played a few games of Civ 5 but never really got much into it.

But now I have a Mac.  Is there anyway to somehow transfer my already purchased Civ 4 game + expansion packs to a Mac?

Or is Civ 6 (aka the new hotness) where most people are?  I saw there are still some active PB / PBEM Civ 4 games going on

Good to see you again!

I know of at least a couple of people (Coeurva and B4ndit) who were able to get a Windows version of Civ4 working on a Mac using WINE, which is free software designed to translate programs' Windows-based actions into equivalent Mac-based actions. ("Actions" is not the correct programming term, but you get the idea.) There are instructions for how to install or "build" WINE for Mac on the software's official site, but the fastest/easiest way to get it working is probably to use (also free) third-party software to install WINE and get it set up properly for the game. B4ndit is apparently using "Play On Mac" and a quick search I did when he was trying to figure out how to make it work also turned up a Windows-to-Mac "Porting Kit".

I hope this helps!

As RefSteel mentioned, you can play the CD version of Civ 4 on Mac through Wine, and the Steam version should work with Wine as well.

Most people are still playing Civ 4, with the latest game being the 25 player pitboss. The mega-pitboss has as usual sucked up most of the active players, though you should be able to find enough players for a PBEM or a small Pitboss.

Interest in Civ 6 is slowly growing, but games are still limited to PBEM. Map editing has recently been discovered.

I`m looking for a game to play right now. How about a small Pitboss (8-10 players) with RTR mod and AI diplo?

I would play a Civ4 game. Not familiar with Macs so can't offer advice there

regoarrarr as others pointed out CIV 4 on mac works mostly fine. Single player and multiplayer with mods that do not modify/use CvGameCoreDLL.dll file will work natively on Mac. Only if a mod requires modified CvGameCoreDLL.dll (like RtR for player 16+ games) you would need to use PlayOnMac.

If your old Civ4 is steam version, you should be able to reuse it without problems.

For native installation (no mods touching CvGameCoreDLL.dll), just install Steam and install Civ4 BtS.

For emulated version, install PlayOnMac, it's much better compared to Wine. PlayOnMac is a wrapper around Wine that:
* encapsulates each game in a separate environment, allowing to use different wine/libraries/dx versions/fonts for different games - for example sometimes some games do not work on newer versions and vice versa
* includes semi tested automatic recipes what libraries/things are required to run each game

I'm using both approaches, native for single player and emulated for PB38 (it has some minor quirks). For emulated PlayOnMac I have used updated receipt from the comment posted by alcorsepol on Saturday 29 July 2017 at 18:15 in this link:
