LKendter plays SMAC again

First time in ages I have played. Took a few quick starts just to recall enough of the interface to start this game.

I played different, going with pods to show what they do.

I picked Morgon, Pods on, Librarian, with standard size map.

I start with research Centauri Ecology.  IMO nothing is more important then being able to improve squares.

I get a bonus colony pod, so the game thinks my start is weak.

I get two unity rovers from nearby pods.  At least I can explore faster.  I get information networks from a pod.

Next up I research doctrine: mobility.  I want to have fast units.

I forget that some pods give negative results.

I start work on Industrial.

I forget about getting 10 credits for planet pearls when killing mind worms.

I am slowly recalling what pods give.  I got $75 from one.

Even the simple mechanics are forgotten.  I forget you can farm AND mine a tile.  Net effect is +1 minerals without losing food.  Longer process, but I appreciate the bonus mineral.

Next research is biogentics.

My third city is pretty broken thanks to pod creating a bunch of bonus food tiles. Taking a hit on the food right now, but you can see one insane tile. I only left this here for a second to show the crazy tile. The nutrient tile is insane.

My first interface question - does anyone recall a way to show food yields on tiles on the map?

Finally figured out how to show one at a time, but a global view would be much nicer.

As far as I remember there isn't, but it's really easy to remember. It's just 2-1-0 based on how green they are.

Heh, I was looking for the show-tile-yields button too, but I don't think it exists.

Rainy + jungle + farm + nutrient bonus should be 6 food, right? Add a condensor when you can to take it to 9. And park a supply crawler on it. wink

The earthquake isn't inherently negative - actually the raised terrain is meant to help you collect solar power - but the big downside here was deleting the jungle from the tiles that got raised.

Next up in research is doctrine: flexibility. I still have no contacts, and I wonder if there are some overseas civs. Getting a unit that can explore seas will really help.

More of the silliness you can get from pods.

I forgot how much fun listening to the quotes was.
Next up is researching social psych.
This game is more recall how to play the game more than anything else. I got reminded how nasty mind worms are when I lost a former as they fast moved through fungus.
I barely complete the Weather Paradigm. I got a warning that someone else was close just as an artifact arrived to finish it.

I finally get some contract in 2168. I found the Peacekeepers overseas. I pick up multiple techs in trade. We are now running democratic for social engineering. He also gives me contact with Miriam. She is also on that other land mass.

Next up is industrial automation.
In 2176 I contact the very weak Spartans.
This is an overview of my civ so far.  Morgan Interstellar lost pop due to the blasted mind worms.

I already plan to play another game after this one.  To many mistakes I would like to correct already.  There is a big push for recon rovers now to get to double defense in each city.  I can't afford another pop surprise.

Earthquakes? Dimensional gates? lol I think I am glad I am playing with pods off, at least for my first game. What exactly was the Unity packing in those pods to produce such effects? smoke

What is the effect of jungle? I have found the Monsoon Jungle far away in my game, but was not sure just what it did to tile yield. But from T-hawk's thread it sounds like it is a real boost to any faction that starts there. More food?

Thanks for posting. thumbsup Following with interest.
