Is anyone up for a new SG starting between Christmas and New Year?
My proposal:
Version: 1oom 1.0 with fixbugs.pbx, uiextra and AI:Classic+ (should be roughly equivalent to kyrub's patch)
Difficulty: Impossible
Race: Silicoids (?)
Variants: ?
I still have not beaten impossible with the Silicoids, so no variant would be challenging enough for me. Depending on what mix of players we get, we might want to add one. If you want to play another race, or prefer the Dos version, I'm up for that as well.

Sounds like fun! My schedule is chaotic, but I'd like to try to participate. I'm happy with either 1oom or the old-school (e.g. dosbox with kyrub's patch) version of the game. (And the save files can be converted back and forth, so in principle different players could even play it in different formats, though that seems like it would be a little silly.)
I'm happy with Vanilla Silicoids or just about anything else; for that matter, if someone wants more of a challenge but can't think of a good variant, I can come up with some suggestions....

I don’t play nearly enough Silicoid games so I would certainly be interested. My schedule is a little uncertain but I think I can make it work. Also I don’t have a PC so I think I’m limited to 1.40m.

I’m a long time lurker that would be interested in an SG if one gets off the ground!

Welcome, Bionic Commando! With four of us interested, we should be able to get something started - and of course others are welcome to join in too, even if you don't have time to jump in until the new year!
Since it looks like Ianus will be playing in dos(box) mode with kyrub's 1.40m patch unless/until someone uses 1oom's source code to compile a version that works on his machine, we should probably just all play on 1.40m - though if someone prefers to use 1oom for any reason, we can do the file conversions as needed when the save is passed around. And it looks like everyone is happy with Vanilla Silis (definitely say otherwise if you want something different!) so all that's needed is for somebody to start the game! If this sounds good to everyone and no one else volunteers to start us off, I'll probably play the first 20 turns, open a game thread, and post a report either ridiculously late tonight or sometime tomorrow night (Pacific Standard Time, so sometime in the next 40 hours). If anyone wants first crack at it and can get us started sooner, definitely feel free!

Lurking, lurking, hoping to find time for more MOO one day. But not this one . Have fun, and welcome to Bionic Commando!

Lead the way RefSteel! I assume we are playing standard Medium Five etc?
I’m sorry to be the limiting factor to try out 1oom! I’m excited for it too I just need to not have a Mac. Some day...
Welcome Bionic Commando!

Welcome, Bionic Commando!
Go ahead with starting us off, RefSteel! I'm happy to see someone else play the opening. Silicoids are just so weird. In my last game (on hard) I kept my homeworld below maximum industry for a very long time for higher pop-growth. Without Eco Restoration, what's a good early research target, if any? We're guaranteed IT9 in Construction I think.

Thanks guys, I'll try not to suck!
@RFS-81 - I was also trying to think through early Planetology play with the rocks. Have to admit that they're one of my least frequently played races! Maybe we just de-emphasize that branch entirely?

Yup, that's what I went with!

All very true - and in Planetology, we're guaranteed Terraforming +10! The rocks, who can never enrich their soil, tend to need all the terraforming they can get, and if the game lasts long enough, later in the tech tree, Cloning helps them out a lot too. Other than that, early research targets depend on the circumstances. II9 can be very helpful, as can Propulsion, depending on where we need to go....

I'm sure you'll succeed, but also, secretly, that's not nearly as important as having fun with it! And even if things go wrong, as I know from both personal experience on both sides of such cases, it'll just make things more interesting for the team as a whole!

I do think (as I said above) that Terraforming (and sometimes eventually Cloning) is really important for the 'coids. Larger planets help them grow faster to reduce the sting of their growth penalty, and of course just in general, population is power. Planetology may not be as critical for the rocks early on as it is for other races, but I think it still has a lot of value.
Also: The game thread is up! I'll try to post some pre-turn analysis there tonight, and probably post my full report tomorrow night.
