Romance of the Three Kingdoms

I have a long term project of reading the four chinese classics (四大奇书; 四大奇書). After Water Margin and Journey to the West I'm currently working my way through the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and liking it very much. This got me thinking about the video game series. I'm looking for a new turn based strategy game like Civ 4 or HoMM3 and am wondering if it will fill that role.

I'm guessing that there is someone on this forum that have experience with the series. If so, is it any good? Wwhich of the thirteen games would you recommend?

For those interested I can recommend the TV-series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL...2dBvuDADJG

I can second the podcast recommendation!  Entertaining, and also very good at explaining things that are taken for granted with a Chinese audience but can't be for an American like me.  He does a good job with pacing and general sound quality is high, too.  I haven't quite finished the podcast, I'm currently on episode 136, but I figure that's enough engagement to be able to recommend it.

I tried the TV series a while back when Bobchillingworth recommended it but couldn't keep up with the plot and the characters.  I think I may try it again now that the podcast has given me some background knowledge.

And I have nothing useful to say on your game question mischief.

Since you're playing games based on the Chinese classics, have you tried the PSX games Suikoden 1 and Saiyuki:  Journey West?  Suikoden 1 is a traditional Japanese RPG supposedly based on the Water Margin (or at least the Stars of Destiny concept).  Saiyuki:  Journey West is an RPG with a similar combat system to Final Fantasy Tactics.

I haven't played the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games, though Wall of Fire seems to be a typical example of the series with a lot of ports.  It's sometimes compared with another Koei strategy series, Nobunaga's Ambition.

Appreciated anyway =)

Good suggestions but I'm not that into RPG:s. I prefer a grander scale.
