Hey I'm Jowy. I used to play Civ4 here a long time ago. I was bad, then I got better, and now I've forgotten everything. You may know me as the git from PB2.

With only two picks between my leader and civilization pick, I'll get one of the civs I was looking at guaranteed, so I'm going with a leader first.
Trying to choose between which Financial leader to take. Fin ate a big nerf, but you're still always going to build cottages and gain long-lasting benefits from the trait. We have some options left on what to pick with Fin. Philo got a buff, but I'm looking for something more early game. Chr gives us +1 happiness and another +1 when we build half-price Monuments, which we'll have to do if we don't go Cre or rush religion (lol). Exp got hit with the nerf bat, maybe nice for Inca or a water map, but very niche now. Health is rarely as much of an issue as happiness. Creative is still nice for fast free border pops. Imp is good for settler bonuses, but in a way Chr also works towards that by allowing larger cities or more whipping. New Pro might be really good as it scales up with trade routes, but a few others already went for it, so I'll let them be the guinea pigs. Charriu even went for the fast harbors with EXP. Industrious is bad without fail gold, it was already not that great. Aggressive goes nice with some Civ picks for aggro strategy, but I'm not marrying myself to that path. Org/Spi have their uses but never been a big fan and they didn't get buffed. Final two: Hannibal (FIN/CHR) and Willem (FIN/CRE). And we're going with.... WAIT! A new challenger appears! What if we went for FIN/PRO? The +75% trade route yield tempts me. I should run a test game, but I don't want to hold up the snake pick. Sorry, I ran a very quick and sloppy test game. The main takeaway is that I definitely want Chr. That defeats the commerce hydra pick. That leaves us with Hannibal (FIN/CHR) and Churchill (PRO/CHR). And my pick is... Hannibal! Wonder if we could get some nice elephants for him?
Did not expect Japan to go this early. I don't get it.
Civs I'm considering: Egypt - Love War Chariots. Obelisk has synergy too, though early great priests aren't a huge thing. Maybe settle one early? Khmer - War Elephants. Nerfed/Banned for a reason. Sumerian - Vultures are good. You'd really want to go to war. Egypt/Sumeria start with Agri+Wheel, Khmer with Hunting+Mining. Not gonna stress over the starting micro before the sim with the picks gets posted. I'll rule out Sumeria first because of our leader pick. Egypt is my favorite civ. However I predict war would be most threatening a little later on when Ballista Ellys would be much more useful than War Chariots. Yes, they are nice even for defensive wars. You need to hit the enemy stack, not hide in a city. And you can build them without ivory in the mod if you have iron, so easier to get. Hunting got an indirect buff: Without hunting, scouts only move 1, and Agriculture is as cheap as Hunting. So the start should still flow nicely. Mining is nice to have with all the hills and forests (BW) around. Plus, wouldn't it be a thematically fantastic pari-up? Let's go with Khmer! The people of Thailand have historically ridden elephants into battle. They are sacred animals there. King Naresuan, who is still venerated in Thailand, is said to have fought a one-on-one duel with Maha Uparaja of Burma, with both on the backs of elephants wielding halberds. (Naresuan's elephant had gone out of control and taken him too far into the Burmese lines; instead of retreating he challenged the enemy leader to single combat and won.) The King of Siam (Thailand's original name) famously offered Abraham Lincoln a herd of war elephants to help with The American Civil War. Lincoln politely declined King Mongkut's offer on the grounds that the States do not extend South enough to comfortably raise them. From TV Tropes: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/M...rElephants The existence of actual Ballista mounted War Elephants seems to be somewhat in question

- William Tecumseh Sherman Settled in place. Worker first and Agri -> AH. We'll talk about what next when we get there. We are near a coast. Curvature will tell whether it's the inland sea of the donut or the ocean. First reaction: Glad to see rivers. Not so glad to see jungle already in two directions. I will name this the starvation zone. Protective would have been better than Charismatic if the map is all like this. Low food, plenty of water tiles. Weird donut shape? |
