Start downloading the Guild Wars 2 client

To those who've pre-ordered/pre-purchased Guild Wars 2, you should start downloading the client now and keep it updated before the early start. See this thread on how to do that (near the bottom).

If you've been participating in the beta events and you still have the files, then you can spare yourselves another 16 gigabyte download by just copying the dat file over. First run the downloaded Gw2Setup.exe and wait until it starts downloading 216k+ files. Close the client at that point and copy over the beta dat file to where you installed the GW2 client. Afterwards, run the GW2 client again just to make sure everything's okay. Just keep it up to date between now and the early start and you should be good to go.

Isn't the client the same?

I've done the events, and can still update that client (and do every couple of days).

Is the release client different?

Yeah it could be the same. I'm not sure though. Anyway I put the beta in it's own e:\gw2beta\ and so this gave me the opportunity to put the release in the \program files\ directory during the setup. I think the beta client will work on release though so do as you like.

no worries.

i don't know either.

thanks for alerting the community here that the full download was already live, though.

my current dat is 15 GB and the exe is at 21 MB.

i'm going to wait and see how the release plays before i decide if i need to move the files off my HDD (10k raptor) to a usb 3 stick, like i did with D3, which has an, erm, interesting philosophy on pre-loading areas.

speaking of performance, did anyone else have issues on the last open weekend?

i'm running a e8500 core 2 duo wolfdale at 3.16, 8 GB of ram, win 7 x64, 10k raptor, and amd 6900 series gpu, and GW2 detected that as bottom-of-the-barrel and set everything at minimum and i still had fps issues in crowds.

if this is minimum, no laptop should be able to run it...

i'm hoping there was some sort of glitch, because i don't have the cash to go i7 atm...

and, really, there isn't a whole lot a whole lot better than the rest of my specs.

When I played long time ago, it wasn't running too smooth on my antique setup - 10-15fps on the average, iirc. Still, I can't resist buying the game and hope for an i7 later. For right now, I think if I clean my system up, get Win8 and install a hand me down video card it should at least be not annoying.
