Intersite Game - Turn Discussion Thread

"Biggest events leading to elimination" list from an observer:
- Missing Oracle-to-Currency by 1 turn
- Losing MoM because CivFr had marble and we didn't (or were too slow otherwise)
- Mackoti joining CFC & giving away our marble interest in diplo --> leading to loss of Taj
- Terrible internal communication that drove many of our top players away --> I think our empire management during the last 40-50 before the dogpile was not close to the excellent level that we had during the first 100 turns (btw, I don't say that the team would have benefitted much from my contribution, but I also felt that responses to critique or suggestions were so blunt and unfriendly that it was very easy decision to not participate actively in discussion)
- It's not clear to me what the best approach with the Germans would have been, but surely the war with them impacted the outcome significantly and there is always room for improvement..

I think that if 1 or 2 of those things would have ended up/have been handled differently, our chances to survive the inevitable dogpile would have increased drastically. Of course we could have taken the CFC approach and just play 2-minute turns during the first 100 turns, sit comfortably on the 5th place and hope that we end up on top once several leader dogpiles have taken place.. mischief

That said, this game included many extremely impressive performances too, and kjn's C&D, Sulla's reporting, scooter's diplo and early micro planning from the whole team among others were major efforts that deserve bow bow bow

Private forum was necessary. Maybe we could/should have let anyone in. I don't think either way that made a huge difference.

The forum didn't need to be as hostile as it was, however. Certainly that was a part of what drove me away. I think a lot of people can take blame for that.

I do think ultimately the only winning move here was not to play. While I have zero doubt that scooter is right, the bottom line is the game we signed up for wasn't remotely an RB style game. There's a reason the RB style game exists here - its the format we (collectively, as in the majority of our players, I realize there are some who disagree) prefer. And ultimately we played a game that would likely have won an RB style game.

Its a shame things turned out as they did, since we won't get the kind of interesting postmortem from the players best positioned to do so that we can really learn something from this exercise, which in my mind, is the true heart of the RB spirit.

And finally, huge kudos to m_h for playing this out in a position few others would have found a way to enjoy.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

If so, where?
They're still playing. The game isn't over. "Did" is the wrong tense. wink

Maybe we'll get a look in a year or two when the game does finish.

Not that this matters now but WPC is being taken apart. From Civstats they lost three cities last turn and have lost points as the turn rolled the last two turns. I guess they're starving remaining cities for some reason each turn. Bwahahaha.
