As you all may have noticed not every player in an MP game is posting regularly in their respective spoiler thread and not everybody is adding screenshots. So I've been wondering if it would be possible to have an oberserver/spectator mode/player in an MP, who would report on the current state of the game. Is this possible from a technical point of view and would you like to have someone do something like this?

I see that I should have used the "Search" before asking about the technical possibility. That still leaves the question if players and lurkers would like to want this?

There is one built into RtR mod, that used some weird web interface.
I was asked to disable it by default, because it eats the bandwidth.
You're probably best off asking novice about it, I think he built it.

I think what helps is the odd comment, even if it is just praising the screenshots.
Also dedlurkers with which you communicate help a lot as well, to get you motivated to post more.

As Krill pointed out, we have done this a couple times. The built-in method, and also having the mapmakers create a lurker civ with a whole bunch of Great spies and Satellites and other information gathering methods. The bigger problem is social. It turns out that being a color commentator is actually more work than playing a civ, and less fun. You have to be at least as reliable as a player, pay attention to a lot more of what's going on, spend more time, and you don't get to make any decisions. It's hard to recruit someone to do all that work reliably...the time we did it with a civ, it turned out to be hard to have the lurker civ reliably end turn toward the end!

Plako did a good reporting method.
One picture per turn and one sentence to explain it.
It's a fun minigame imo.

It's also good discipline for thinking about the game. If you choose your picture by asking yourself every turn, "What's the most important thing that just happened?", it will improve your focus.

Yeah, always a picture every turn is a good rule.
