Hold over from traditional MP and when most people wouldn't commit to a turn a day pace and it was the only way to keep peoples attention IMO. There was also an issue that with the number of players and size of the map, that people would regularly die to starting warriors after going worker first, knowing that if they didn't die they'd have a huge advantage and if they lost, the could start a new game, which is itself part of the "warfare on quickspeed sucks continuum".
I've always preferred large PB games. If PB13 is the next RB mod PB game, it looks like there may be over 15 players which would be a huge game.
