I watched 2 videos of Testers and right now I like what I see. I think restricting the switch to 2 times is a good choice and they want to go into a fresh direction.
I never, never got the vitriol that CIV V and CIV VI got here in the RB community. Both had issues, but were good (Civ V) or great iterations (CIV VI).
I for one am happy that they experiment. And will probably buy and play it day 1.
The big problem with V and VI was that the AI was incapable of playing either game (in fact for V the AI was the same as IV's for the most part). And with both games spending so little effort on multiplayer, having a game that couldn't play along with you was a waste of hard drive space.
Edit: Plus Civ VI had DLC bloat that was far worse than BtS, making the game mostly just busy work after the first couple of eras. There are other issues, like both games being strategic empire building that penalised warring (the main way such games allow you to build empire) and so on, but the non existent computer challenge and bloat were the big two for me.

There is a way to play a Pitboss game in Civ 6. It's just really expensive as you need a separate steam account with civ 6 to stay logged into MP in an observer mode, can't play with a turn timer, and I'm not sure anyone has actually tried it. It's a hack and a rip off. Just accept a slower game and play a PBEM (even if we had to hack that together).
Civ 7 doesn't look like it even those options.
Current games (All): RtR: PB80 Civ 6: PBEM23
Ended games (Selection): BTS games: PB1, PB3, PBEM2, PBEM4, PBEM5B, PBEM50. RB mod games: PB5, PB15, PB27, PB37, PB42, PB46, PB71. FFH games: PBEMVII, PBEMXII. Civ 6: PBEM22 Games ded lurked: PB18

Is there any way to get a sense of the size of the Civ6 online multiplayer base? My gut tells me that 4x strategy gaming is enjoyed as multiplayer by a vanishingly small percentage of total players. Hence Firaxis strangling it of resources.
The Age of Wonders series and the Dominions series are both still being developed with an eye towards multiplayer. (Bing, you around?) And there were a few aborted attempts to slim down 4x gaming specifically to cater to multiplayer (Nexus 5X, Solium Infernum). They bombed.

If Nexus 5X and Solium Infernum did bomb, the market has spoken so Firaxis is responding in kind. But will check both of those games out. Never heard of them before.
EDIT: so I could not find a game called Nexus 5X and not touch SI for sure. the setting of the latter is a no go for me.

Actually, I mostly play for the live multiplayer. But civ 5/6 barely functioned, the net code is awful. constant desyncs and issues. I've managed to play 6+ player games with civ 4 online without desyncs period on the zulan server.
But more importantly -- for civ 7, the game design is simply not built around the consideration that any form of multiplayer will be played! I have no clue how you balance an age system around MP. That was my main point.

I suspect MP games will be played in a single age, after all they even have different player limits for different ages

Yeah, the different player limits has me worried. A bad call.

On the plus side, I can claim to be the greatest Civ VII player in the world and no one can disprove me.

In general the direction the Civ series has been going for awhile is de-emphasizing the 4X elements in favor of role-play. I used to say it was Civ for people who were bad at Civ, but that was maybe a bit uncharitable. Instead I'd say it's Civ for people who liked Civ4 Rhyse and Fall. I thought R&F was terrible, but a ton of people like that sort of thing.
I wish Humankind or Old World grabbed me the way the Civ series has done at times. Maybe I should give them another try, but in general Humankind felt like it had too much useless stuff, and Old World's order system didn't feel great to me.

Best guess for Nexus 5X https://store.steampowered.com/app/1983990/Nexus_5X/

The more I see about Civ 7 the gladder I am that there are still people willing to play Civ 4 PitBoss games.
