[SPOILER] Krill rambles on

Actually he recommended that we enable your whining and move your ivory to first ring. smoke It's now on the tile NE of your settler.

You know what the really trolly thing is? I've been working on the MM, and because of the time to pottery I'm not 100% certain that working inner ring ivory is beneficial. So you can probably be happy with the fact that my whining may have backfired!

EDIT: Although looking at the numbers Pottery is actually OK, and the extra hammers would essentially cause the first warrior to be built on growth to size 2, and then no change to the other buildings until it comes to complete the granary which would finish one turn sooner and mean an extra 5 food could be saved in it, which works out at an extra 10 hammers by around T40. Plus the extra river tile that doesn't need to keep a forest versus slightly harder to hook ivory.

Really, it's a minor boost but one which is appreciated all the same, given the effect it has one just a single opening.

If you're planning on warrior rushing, please let me know so I can remove all food tiles within a 15 tile radius of your starting settler so at least the rest of the game won't be ruined.

Nah, check the edit. Moving the ivory has a small effect on this start, but the presence of inner ring ivory on double land food starts would have a stronger effect on snowball. Simply put, wb doesn't work the ivory for as long until it has an improved tile, worker first would work it for 10 turns, maybe even 13-14 depending on available food resources and a really early granary for PRO leaders.

tl;dr moving ivory inner ring is small buff for split land/sea starts, larger buff for double land starts.

Part of the reason I want the game to start soon is that I need to scout around the cow to see if I can settle to overlap it. I'd need a six food land tile to make it work reasonably well but I have a few plans that could be pretty good for this start and leader/civ.

I haven’t done a tier list in ages, not since PB16. And I don’t think I’m really capable of doing a good one now, but because I’m bored and the game set up is low as fuck right now (but reasonably so, we’re testing out something that’s never been done on RB before) I’m going to write a bit about at least some of the players.

There are players here that I don’t know, von Adler, tao tao, Nyles that I have nothing good to write about them. Well, they don’t behave weird and they still want to play civ, which I suppose makes them outliers from most communities but I ain’t complaining. I don’t know how they play, what their skills are like, if they are smurfs and frankly I don’t care much: Sullla hates RtR and he is the most prolific smurfer known to RB. I just don’t want one of them to be Parkin in disguise.

Writing about players I do know limits the field about. There are 22 other single players or teams in this game. I hope I can write about 2 to 4 of them tonight, and we’ll see about hte rest later.

First up, tier 1: People you trust to know what they’re doing even if you don’t have a clue what’s happening.

dtay: Augustus Caesar (IMP/IND) of Sumeria.

dtay has played in the past two big games on RB, PB13 and PB18, plus a bunch of other pit boss games. I think he may even have played more than I have by now, what with playing in PB19, 22 and 25. Definitely an active player, and someone that has shown the ability to take a reasonably faster starting leader/civ combo and cramming it into a mid game leading position in PB18, 22 and 25. He always seems to get Lib, and Oracle a good amount of times, to the extent that he was first characterised as Sullla 2.0 that doesn’t give up the moment someone looks at him funny.

Looking at the player list here, I’d rate him as at least joint #1 in the game in terms of overall skill. He knows how to read the game, he can strategise and how to grow an advantage. He knows how to kill civs quickly and efficiently. He knows how to defend, but reading through some of his games he seems to put more units onto defense when he is attacking someone. OTOH that’s a lesson he’s learnt from getting screwed into the ground by people attacking him opportunistically to slow him down, more a positive than a negative. I don’t know if I’d say he is as good as mackoti or Seven, but given that neither mack nor Seven are playing atm he’s tier 1.

dtay’s combination is, frankly, the one combination in this game that is going to define how the first 60 turns play out for everyone. He has the ability to get out a settler by around T25 for rapid horizontal growth and hookiing up more food resources sooner to snowball. He has cheap, early court house UB on Priesthood, and IND for Oracle into MC. dtay beelines Oracle from T0, it’s the most obvious “Well duh” the game right now. The question is, does some lunatic just try to short circuit the wonder build and Oracle something themselves that is cheaper like Monarchy that doesn’t need Pottery. Given that there are only three IND players in this game, it’s hard to see that happening. I believe a Myst civ that has the right food tech could go for religion>second food tech>ph and try to rush Oracle but...nah. It’s dtays to lose.

I will admit I put some thought into trying to Oracle CoL, but I couldn’t make it work. Needing Writing slowed it down too much even for a risky play, given that I also need to tech Fishing, Hunting, Pottery and BW.

What I expect to happen is to see dtay spam out 2 settlers, settled around T27 and T36, and then he will overflow slave hammers out of a woker plus 3 forest chops, possibly 1 of which occurs on the turn the worker is completed to overflow out minimum 60 base hammers from the worker and additional 40 hammers from chops to one turn Oracle for safety (100 base hammers, +50% production from IND = 150 hammers for Oracle) and hit MC around T50, maybe T47 at the earliest. At that point it’s a question of what his neighbours do, because dtay rushing an engineer to bulb Machinery is hilarious as Xbows make him invincible to ancient era junk and Xbows wreck swords. Add in HA and cats and I think he just spams settlers, holds his borders and builds up to murder someone with knights again.

dtay is the pace setter, watch what he does, because everone else reacts to the pressure he exerts on the map and on the tech tree. Bonus points if he builds Mids though.

Serdoa: Wang Kon (FIN/PRO) of England.

Man, it’s great to see Serdoa back. Guy takes no bullshit from other players and hates Commodore, so hopefully they aren’t immediate neighbours but end up crashing into each other in the midgame. Serdoa is hard as nails, respect the guy. He disappeared about a year ago before PB18 took off, but he was IMO one of the best players on the site at that point, and I don’t see how he would have lost any of his skill. Serdoa dragged a close to unplayable jungle start out the the second place finish in PB8, and is a bit more of an old school brawler IMO. He isn’t someone I expect to see in the lead in the demographics at T50 although he easily can be, I expect him to be there at T150 sitting pretty. Somehow. As said, he hasn’t played for a while, so amny lurkers interested in reading more should read PB8 and PBEM47 for high skill games of his.

Serdoa has perhaps the best balanced leader/civ combination in the game. Both traits synergise with his civ, for protective red coast and FIN Stock Exchanges. PRO helps early growth with the cheap granaries, and with the tech cost scaling effect granaries are available REALLY early. Depending on the start Serdoa has he could have a granary as early as T17 or so, before growing to size 2, and abuse that easy food to try and grow some cottages earlier in the game and break out from tech in that. Cottages have even been buffed by the improved Free Speech, FIN gets river commerce bonus back, at the cost that coast need 80 hamemrs to turn on to 2/0/4 tiles. Is it an issue? Not IMO, not with the ability to use FS and potentially Emancipation to turn hybrid cities into fully fledged cottage cities in the mid to late game. So long as he doesn’t go overboard on cottages early (See Pin in PB18 for that) Serdoa just needs to play like he normally does and find a tasty snack to eat to gorge on more land like everyone else does and I expect him to hit the mid-late game in a very strong position. His biggest weakness is if he get’s bogged down bteween cities 3-5 and some newbie drags him back with a dumb rush or plants in his face and makes him angry. I don’t know how short his temper is at the moment. We’ll see but I expect him to be a leader rather than stuck in the pack.
