I had the wrong mod installed. All good now, except that I started off on top of five other settlers, I don't think this map has been balanced properly!

I can see that I'll have to learn to play civ in ways I never contemplated before! Ah well, I should probably defer any further questions until I manage to get home, install the mod, and tool around for a while.
