RB's Magic the Gathering Thread!

How are you on access to non-basic lands? Considering you have 1-drops of both colours, you need at least Llanowar Wastes and/or Mana Confluence

Collected Company has been garbage in my testing, are you sure you want to go that route?

I'm not sure Pitiless Horde is good in a format with widely played Lightning Strike/Bile Blight, it's not aggressive enough and has a very real drawback. Abzan Aggro has a very real problem taking a lot of damage from their own lands, and I would expect the manabase of this deck to be even more painful. Add another card with a loss of life drawback, and you're going to kill yourself

Considering the Protour was just won by a mono-red deck, and you're building a deck for one tournament and not trying to break the format, I would just go with mono-red

PT winning decklist for reference (you can cut the green splash and limit your manabase to basic Mountains if you're on a budget):

Creature (15)
4 Foundry Street Denizen
1 Frenzied Goblin
2 Goblin Rabblemaster
1 Lightning Berserker
4 Monastery Swiftspear
3 Zurgo Bellstriker

Sorcery (8)
4 Dragon Fodder
4 Hordeling Outburst

Instant (17)
4 Atarka's Command
1 Become Immense
4 Lightning Strike
4 Stoke the Flames
4 Wild Slash

Land (9)
4 Mana Confluence
1 Temple of Abandon
4 Wooded Foothills
1 Forest
10 Mountain

Sideboard (15)
2 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
1 Goblin Heelcutter
1 Destructive Revelry
2 Hall of Triumph
4 Roast
1 Scouring Sands

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Re: Deathmist Raptor - I honestly have no idea; he's just been hyped.
Re: Collected Company - It's seemed to be useful to me in my (albeit very limited) testing. It is hit-or-miss, though. The nice thing is it grabs (almost) all the creatures I wanted to play anyway (it was actually added as an afterthought).
Re: Pitiless Horde - I guess the idea is just to kill your opponent faster with it, but fair enough.

You guys both mentioned manabase, which is a very valid concern. Honestly (ready for some smoke?), for one, casual, tournament with a brewed deck, I was just going to go with the Casual Player's Secret - even numbers of both types of basics is enough to get you through almost all your games without issue in a two-colour build. If I were going to play the deck past that, I would of course go buy the Llanowar Wastes and Mana Confluences (or Verdant Catacombs, since Battle for Zendikar will likely be out by next time I'd be able to pick up the deck crazyeye). However ...

Yeah, that seems pretty compelling. I would just have to drop the Rabblemasters and Commands due to budget constraints. It's reminiscent of my Modern Burn deck, so I might even know vaguely how to use it!

Thanks again; I'll let you know how it goes.

so how did it go?

Aaahh ... was kind of hoping to dodge that question, because I decided to go with the brew after all. (Thanks for asking anyway, though.) I just had so much fun with the process of trying to create my own deck for a competitive event, which I'd never really done before, even though I knew RDW was by far the more rational choice. The list I played was a bit different from the one I posted above, due to card availability issues and new ideas I had, but the core was the same. I went 1-3 with it, and had a blast. I quite enjoyed the two different shades of Abzan I faced (midrange and control), as they seemed to offer a lot of choices and interaction from the other side of the table. I faced the RDW deck once. I also faced a Naya brew (the match I won), which I enjoyed, as well, because it was interesting seeing what another person came up with out of the card pool. I found my own deck quite fun to play, too, and even though it 'underperformed' I still intend to keep the key cards (Surrak and Collected Company) around for the next time I'm able to play Standard (in the fall) and whatever new goodies are released that will synergize well with them. Anyway, thanks for the feedback, guys; I hope I didn't disappoint too much by not playing the best deck. smile

Well, if the result was not important, and you had fun, that's what matters smile

I top8ed my game day with a Grixis Dragons deck which may or may not be better than Esper Dragons, the deck which dominated Grand Prix Krakow. UR Dragons aggro-control shell which takes advantage of Silumgar's Scorn, but can be aggresive with Thunderbreak and Stormbreath was played at the first major tournament with Dragons of Tarkir, SCG Invitational, where Jeff Hoogland finished in top16 with it. Patrick Dickmann played a Jeskai version (splashing for Ojutai) at the Protour, where he went 6-0 before dropping due to poor performance in limited. Black splash may be better than white though, as black has better removal, and Silumgar is at least comparable to Ojutai. I don't know if I continue with these colours, but so far this version looks the most promising
Creatures (11)
2 Icefall Regent
3 Stormbreath Dragon
4 Thunderbreak Regent
1 Dragonlord Silumgar
1 Silumgar, the Drifting Death

Spells (23)
4 Anticipate
3 Dig Through Time
2 Roast
2 Foul-Tongue Invocation
1 Murderous Cut
1 Crater's Clows
2 Anger of the Gods
2 Crux of Fate
4 Silumgar's Scorn
2 Stubborn Denial

Lands (26)
2 Island
2 Mountain
2 Swamp
2 Bloodstained Mire
2 Haven of the Spirit Dragon
4 Polluted Delta
3 Shivan Reef
3 Temple of Deceit
4 Temple of Epiphany
2 Temple of Malice

Sideboard
3 Disdainful Stroke
2 Dragonlord's Prerogative
2 Negate
3 Ultimate Price
1 Sarkhan's Triumph
1 Anger of the Gods
1 Crux of Fate
2 Roast

That's a pretty cool list, yuri. Congratulations on your top 8!

I made top 4 at my Game Day with my BW enchantments deck I've been running for a while--granted we only had 13 people show up, so I managed to make top 8 with a 2-2 record, and only won my top 8 match because my opponent made a massive punt with Polukranos. Still, I got the Thunderbreak Regent, which is all that matters smile

New article up today, on my initial design of Mercadian Masques Remastered--it isn't my best article since I had to finish it up rather hastily, and the set isn't in the best place since I haven't been able to test it at all yet, but it's something at least :/

Good job, CH! That's what I was trying to do in my Game Day, too (we only had 15 people, too); I almost made it, but not quite. Ah well.
