RB's Magic the Gathering Thread!

Born out of the fantasy football draft, here it is smile

So what are people liking out of the new Khans spoilers from the Pax party? I mean, Sultai Charm is obviously awesome, but Crackling Doom is interesting as well.

Also, if you're not playing Cockatrice, you should be--my name's the same as my RB name smile

I'm pretty excited about most of the Khans stuff, though I think that Outlast is a pretty lame mechanic even if it might end up good. The new Sarkhan looks fun. smile

My Cockatrice name is FrozenRoy.

And Onslaught (allied) fetches are confirmed--wow!

That surprised me a bit - I'd figured we were a year off on those.

So Modern's manabase will be substantially improved by Khans.
Standard is changing completely.
This block started with a draft structure.

Is there anything they aren't changing with this block?

This brought tears to my eyes. I played Mercadian Masques through Ravnica, and gave up at that. Now I feel so hopelessly behind the curve that there isn't even any point in trying to come back in.

Magic is very good right now. You're missing out smile

Just play limited for a while, you will be able to open/trade for all cards you need for constructed. That's how I started 2 years ago. The game itself didn't change that much since Ravnica; there are new mechanics every year (obviously), but they're not that difficult to understand (because WotC do try to make the game accessible to newcomers and returning players). They are difficult to master - but that's what makes Magic awesome

If you want to learn MTG, I highly recommend Duels of the Planeswalkers on basically any platform: Steam, PS3, 360, XB1, iOS, Android. Any version would work, though I would recommend against 2015, since it removes the premade decks in favor of deckbuilding based on a limited collection, and adds in a bunch of unnecessary microtransactions.

I'd be more worried about the microtransactions than the open deckbuilding for a former player getting back into the game.

Is the AI any good? I quit after Antiquities, but this thread has my nostalgia kicking in...

From how much I've played, the AI is good enough--it's certainly miles better than the Shandalar AI at the very least.
