I was just looking through some of the NWN threads on there and saw complaints about a patch updated advertising more Bioware games. KOP, do you rememeber this?

I just thought how insane it is that that used to be pushing the edge of what the consumer would accept and no we don't even blink at an advertisement on a launcher. Hell, with steam it feels like we barely even own the games. If this was Hell, I wonder how far below hell the current gaming industry would rank.
In keeping with KOP's msg here about proprietary issues, recently SimCity is an example of a company basically stating "You paid for the game, and can't play it but it doesn't matter we're not refunding you. You own it."

I really don't mind advertising as long as I get value from it, and it is not forced upon me. I understand that businesses has the right and obligation to make profits, so the trick is how far can they Push without annoying its customers. If I can quickly skip the ads, and especially if there is an option to skip all ads after the first launch, then I don't mind at all. I would probably sift through all the ads just to see if there's something worth watching, rather than hoping to catch a deal. Some ads are awesome.
Speaking of values, it is actually an advertising agents (top tier agents of course) pledge, to make ads that would give you some value (useful info, entertainment and such) in exchange for (intrusion of) your time. That is almost always the most effective advertising anyway.
I haven't watch TV for over a decade, but I had to endure a couple hours of it at a friends house recently. It is not that the shows are bad, I just couldn't believe I used to waste so much time watching 5 minutes of commercials every 10 minutes. Of course it just seem so NOT RIGHT since netflix and youtube. You might have noticed youtube's been trying some advertising schemes in the last few weeks. One of these was going to make me stop using youtube, at least much less frequently. It was giving me a choice to how many or which commercials to watch. Choice is good, right? No, not if I am slouching on my chair with the mouse just out of reach. You want me to sit up and reach for the mouse and make decisions!?!?!?
Fortunately youtube stopped doing it after a couple of days. There must have been tons of complains. A good company will listen to complains. So if we don't like something, whine.

Actually, I believe this has been an ongoing "experiment" for quite a while, which you will randomly get some small % of the time (probably predicated on there being multiple appropriate ads available at once, of course).
My former co-worker implemented this feature, back in 2008. Our team was responsible for in-video ads, and being reasonable people we focused hard on trying to make the ads as non-annoying as possible given the requirements. IMO our greatest achievement was getting the "skip ad" (after 5 seconds) option on at least some ad formats.
The "choose an ad" thing was supposed to be good for viewers, but in practice I agree with you, and find it irritating.

And in the end it works out better for the advertisers. I would and often watch entire ads if I find it value added. Forcing same non value added ads on me that I have to sit through is just negative branding. It also works better for google, I accept that as a reasonable way for google to monetize youtube. When it Push too much and becomes annoying, everyone loses when I bother too install ad blockers - a battle of push and block technology can be ensured.
