[spoilers] The 49ers: Sanctimony and Public Defecation

Welp, I guess I should be grateful that Raskolnikov didn't see fit to place this spear/axe pair in his capital, but it does mean I'm delayed a turn in murdering him. I tossed my shock horse archers in, got a withdraw and a win, but the axe was still strong enough to not want to send in something from the boats. Landed, and picked up a couple more, so I'll have Raskolnikov nice and free here in another turn.

Cornflakes landed the Hanging Gardens, apropos for Babylon. Gross hammer gain wasn't huge, but I don't think looking at it as raw hammer-per-hammer breakout is right...you're transferring hammers from a core city out to the outlying new cities, often a very good deal.

Try AND take OVER the WORLD, dear Pinky.

In all seriousness, the mid-long (next 40-60 turns) game really doesn't favor me. I might look at swinging a late Colossus, which would help, but as it is I won't even really be able to swing Machinery before I need to be smashing into Cornflakes' face. His new border city will be helpful to me unless he's got a good culture bomb plan; the Sami Curse holy city borders let me hold that hill sheep tile and I can thus fork him pretty well.

The real question is if I should go for Iron Working right now for, let's be honest, really really awesome RtR aggressive swords, versus holding on the extra dozen turns that would lead to the far superior samurai. Either have a decent exchange rate vs. bowmen, while axes, even cover axes (yeah aggressive), will definitely suffer.

I think Boudica is just an amazing RtR leader in general, and then with RtR's really powerful swords to begin with you end up with an army you can get a lot of mileage out of compared to other leaders.

Pitboss 49, Turn 100

Turn 100 began with an ending. Farewell, Raskolnikov, your final day saw you murdering two beautiful Combat III horse archers, that's a good acquittal. As a last bit of amusing vengeance, I had to rejigger my tiles after capturing the city; the loss of Iron Working known tech bonus dropped IW to 2t.

So here's Old Carthage. Such a tiny slice of land to be fighting over, but that's this beautiful, beautiful little bloodbath of a map. I'm sad to see precisely zero cottages here, but it's not like Raskolnikov had much of a long term game to look forward to after his initial skirmishes with Cornflakes. Place ain't loaded with food, but there are lots of nice hills for production and of course this is Civilization 4. Land Is Good.

Interestingly enough, I now have 13 cities to Fintourist and Cornflakes' 9 each. So...up precisely one Carthage Corpse. Down a whole lot of money.

Even burning full-bore on the KTB-loaded Iron Working, my GNP is embarrassing. Which is a real pity because I'm tied for first on hammers, a respectable third in crop, and that approval rating shows I have the most room for growth as well. Huh. Well, only solution is to use that power rating, I guess.

Sorry I've yet to meet Ruff, I know he is the other real Contender Tier guy and it's sad to miss his graphs for the 100th turn. Fintourist might have ya.

The next front. I dunno when I'll hop over to road the sheep; he's not so laid back that he won't recognize that as a full attack. But on the other hand...what's he gonna do?

First Babylonian catapult seen. Have to 1-turn a city or gtfo. I might let him mass a little bit more while I heal and reposition, that great general medic is a wonder for how fast he enables the stacks to get back in the fight. Cornflakes is "bribing" me with dyes right now, so that has to reassure him somewhat.

Why the heck is the lurker thread so moribund? This is a crazy-interesting game.

This game is a lot of fun to watch. Thanks for the reports.

Oh, and case you wondered - the lurkers approve of excessive use of violence. hammer

Eh, it's only shaping up to be another 'Commodore eats all his neighbours' game.

Oi, I'm downright friendly to my buddy Mr. Cairo. Even weakened his own neighbor for him.

I'll also add that that I'm not sure how well I can *eat* Cornflakes. I can knock out his tiny little new city, but the walled city of Candlesticks can easily be stuffed with enough troops to make 1-turning it dicey, and he's going to get himself catapults here sooner or later, which makes stacks untenable.

The 'Commodore eats his neighbors' games tend to result in Commodore get within sniffing distance of winning, but infrequently end up with him on top (quality of opposition and circumstances depending, natch.) It's always interesting to see if this is one of those latter times.

Well, you're committed to capture gold economy...
