My phalanx could attack his axe at 68% odds so I did that. I figure the opportunity to take out an axe of his is worth taking, and if I lost I could always retreat with the rest of the units.
I won, 1.2 health left and 6/5 xp. So I figure I'll move the Phalanx from Pita onto the hill and try to hold the fort there until next turn. It's a bit risky - if he attacks with the archer and the wounded axe in Estonia that could pave the way for his spearmen to attack my chariots. Hm, pity my phalanx didn't survive with more hit points.
I suppose I could just move the Phalanx from Pita there and move out with the chariots. He'll have little incentive to waste his units attacking my two Phalanxes.
I could also attach the GG to the Phalanx in Pita and give it Morale, and use it to take out one of the spears NW of Estonia. That would leave a spear and a warrior NW of Estonia, and a wounded axe and a scout in Estonia. I could then attack those 4 units with 5 chariots.
so what exactly is the plan under scrutiny'
23:16
i just see back and forth comments
and no coherent "should we do this" plan
me: Move the GG into Pita, attach it to the Phalanx there
move the Phalanx S-SE and attack SW to kill the healthy spear (I already killed the axe)
23:17
then kill the other spear with chariots, kill the warrior, and kill the axe in Estonia
probably the scout holds the city unless I get lucky with the chariot vs. spear battles
Noble: estonia has warrior, axe, scout?
me: axe, scout I think
23:18
yeah, axe, scout
the warrior is with the spears
Noble: oh
ok
are there promos on the spears?
are they damaged
23:19
i know this is in the ss but i'm too busy to look a tthat right now
me: one unpromoted healthy spear, one 3.6/4 CI spear
the healthy spear is top defender
the axe in estonia is CI 2.6/5 and dure a shock promo
23:20
*due
I think it's a good plan, main questions are how many chariots are needed to take out the 3.6/4 CI spear, and is it worth burning the general
23:21
but a Morale Phalanx is nice to have
Noble: CI = combat 1?
me: yeah
Noble: oh there are two spears on flatland?
me: two of our 5 chariots have CI as well
yeah two spears and a warrior on flatland
there was an axe there too but I killed it
Noble: CI = codeigniter or continuous integration
23:22
stop saying that :P
23:23
me: I have a chariot on top of the GG too. I could potentially share XP between that and the phalanx in Pita but I think the phalanx should get all the XP
how does healing on boats work btw
Noble: the rule is that
me: I have two injured chariots that could board the galley this turn
Noble: if a unit does not expend any movement points in a turn, it heals
23:24
so boarding a galley means the unit doesn't heal
but if the unit had already boarded and the galley is shipping the unit, the unit heals
me: ok
Noble: if you switch galleys that costs all your movement of course, so you wouldn't heal then
23:25
medic on a galley will speed up healing of the land units on the tile
me: so if you're too busy to really think about my plan that's ok
23:26
Noble: well i checked your odds of two chariots vs an unpromoted healthy spear in the city the other turn
and it was like 37% odds to win across two chariots
23:27
so i would assume you're getting something like 40-45% odds across two chariots on those spears on flatland
me: as long as I have a good chance of success using three chariots on the spear that's fine
23:28
if I spend three chariots I can still kill the axe in Estonia
and probably take the city next turn since there will only be a scout left there
Noble: he has a spear and an archer in range if you move to the western hill, right?
23:29
me: yes
I think moving west with the chariots is pretty pointless
Noble: yeah i would probably sim and most likely attack the flatland stack. you also get the worker if you win
23:30
me: ok, here goes then
(Sims are for pussies)
Noble: if you lose miserably i blame your lack of simming
me:
23:33
so my morale phalanx has 98% odds
and two promos left
should I give him shock?
23:34
then I can promoheal after the battle right?
CR2 would be sweet but shock+cover works too
Noble: he currently has c1/morale?
me: yeah
23:35
Noble: i wouldn't give him CR
too weak on defense
me: shock then?
23:36
Noble: yeah give him shock
then promote to c2 after the fight
me: good plan
flawless victory!
23:37
Noble: it's at 23 exp now?
or 24?
me: 24
Noble: 26 for next promo right?
me: yeah
Noble: other than the current pending promo obviously
ok
23:38
me: 2.6/9.7% odds for chariot vs spear
C1 char has 3.6/9.7
Noble: do you have any phalanxes on the hill
i forget
me: one that's almost dead and already killed Zak's axe
23:39
Noble: oh right
forgot you attacked
i would send a green chariot
as sacrifice
keep the c1 ones for when you have better odds
strength matters more when the ratio is closer
23:40
gives you a better odds swing
me: I have a 1xp one, maybe use it so a withdraw is actually useful
Noble: maybe
23:41
me: I used a green one, spear down to 2.4/4
yeah now C1 matters a lot, C1 gets 55% to win
23:42
and it won!
23:43
unpromoted char vs warrior gets 99.1%, should be worth 2xp
23:44
flawless victory
Noble: ok
so now we have two chariots left?
vs the spear and scout in the city?
me: vs an injured axe and a scout in the city
Noble: oh
me: the city is going down
Noble: i thought he had two spears
23:45
me: he had two outside the city
I killed one with the phalanx
Noble: oh and the morale killed one
right
i got it now
me: not much to think about, there's no way I'm keeping that city
Noble: yeah
how much capture gold?
23:47
me: a measly 14 gold
man, the pillage economy sucks
23:48
Noble: i was surprised to learn a while ago that mines give 10g on average
vs the typical 5g
me: what a ripoff, I only got 7 iirc from the copper mine
23:49
Noble: i've only gotten above average pillage gold like 15% of the time
me: so I have a 1.2/5 C1 6/5xp phalanx on the hill
Noble: in my history of like 20 pillages
me: I can cover it with two healthy unpromoted chariots
zak has a spear an archer in range
or I can just sacrifice the hill and the phalanx
23:50
zak also has a gg somewhere
23:51
Noble: hmmm
well
did you see anything interesting
from capturing the city
23:52
me: no
Noble: are these the two chariots that you were considering putting on the galley before?
23:53
me: no, these are flawless victor from the razing of Estonia
*victors
Noble: ok
me: the wounded chariots are garrisoning Mash and Byte
Noble: can zak attack you from a hill or forest with his spear/archer
or can he only attack from a flatland tile
23:54
me: only from flatland unless he has Engineering already
Noble: ok
so i would check cyneheard's spreadsheet
me: of course he has the GG which is unsettling
Noble: well
let's see
use cyneheard's sheet
23:55
does the spear or archer get better odds on the phalanx?
me: you know defender isn't even chosen based on odds
Noble: i have noticed some oddities but i've never figured out why
me: it's based on strength ratio or something which is not the same when the units are wounded
Noble: is it chosen on strength or something then?
23:56
me: yeah
Noble: well what i want to know is
if he kills the phalanx with say the spear and covers it with the archer
what are the odds of revenge next turn via say the morale phalanx
me: you mean if we leave the axe on the hill unguarded this turn?
Noble: yes
23:57
me: we could kill the archer with our morale phalanx but we'd have nothing with odds on the spear
we just have the two phalanxes
so that's why I want to save it
Noble: well yeah
ok
23:58
well the other thing i would check is
if you cover the phalanx with a spear
and he kills it
what are the odds that you can kill the archer or the spear next turn with the phalanx promoted
so i would check the % chance of the spear being wounded a certain amount and take the median hp
and check the odds for the newly promoted phalanx vs that
and check the odds for the newly promoted phalanx vs an undamaged archer
23:59
me: hm yeah too complicated
but our two phalanxes can both retaliate next turn if I guard with chariots this turn
Noble: hmm
me: of course he could cover with units in the fog
00:00
Noble: right
well
how much exp are on those chariots you'd cover with
me: one has 0 and one has 2 and is due a promotion next turn
00:01
Noble: which one is further left on the unit selection list
me: they're on different tiles currently
Noble: oh
meh
00:02
clearly you should just delete the phalanx
me: sacrilege!
Noble: yeah i'm kidding, i'm generally not a fan of deleting units even if they're likely to die, in a general war theater
i'd do it for stranded units and such
00:04
i would probably just leave the phalanx to die i think
a) he may not attack you anyway for fear of retaliation
b) copper units are more valuable to him right now, so his spear is worth more than your phalanx
00:05
then again, B might be a reason for him not attacking you if you cover with chariots
me: the phalanx is pretty valuable to me too, phalanxes take forever to get to the front
Noble: hmmm
00:06
are you building any units right now
me: also worth noting that I have a worker on the hill that could build a road there if we hold it
Noble: well i would evacuate the worker regardless of what you're doing
what about the worker you captured, what's the status of that
00:07
me: I'm choosing new builds in almost all cities this turn so I'm flexible on builds
Noble: do you need to cover it?
me: it's covered by an almost healthy chariot, I can cover it by two more (the ones I'm considering sending to the hill)
Noble: yeah i was mostly asking whether covering that worker is dependent on covering the phalanx
00:08
would abandoning the phalanx let you pillage some useful roads with the chariots?
00:09
me: not really
the roads that are left will come into my borders at eot
00:11
Noble: well
do you have any idea how much power in units zak has
00:12
me: I was looking at that and the answer is basically "no"
I could try to find out of course
00:13
I'll have to finish this tomorrow anyway
Noble: ok
well i dunno right now
about whether you should cover the phalanx
me: we're just 8k about rival max
*above
Noble: how many power in units do you have?
me: I have 80k power in total
00:14
7 char 3 war 1 gal 2 pha
Noble: ok
he has 1 spear 1 arch that you can see
me: and a scout
Noble: scouts don't give any power
me: ok, I have 48k in units then
00:15
he has archery but less pop
does masonry give power?
Noble: not sure
can you look that up
me: man, do I have to do everything
Noble: yes
00:16
me: I guess I should do the C&D on Zak soon, he may well get Iron Working and/or HBR after this
Noble: well iw and hbr are really obvious
10k spikes iirc
00:17
me: yeah but it would be nice to get forewarning from gnp analysis

Clearly a result of me getting more involved in this game, like a certain other one.
You don't have a third worker in range to finish chopping the phalanx at Pita, do you? That would give you another unit to revenge kill on the hill next turn, potentially.
Also you might want to move the Estonia 2NW worker NE onto the plains tile and keep it there this turn. Next turn you could potentially move it 2S and rebuild that road with the captured worker which will let the GG phalanx move another tile. Not sure if that'll be useful or not though...
