Sunrise, do you mean pitboss? You can host multiple pitboss games off one pc by changing the connecting port iirc. I'd love to play in a really large pitboss game if we could get one up and running; from what I've seen of such games the diplomacy in them is amazing.

For this thread though...PBEM in my experience works best with no more than 6, and at that does need a strict...timetable. Alexman once designed a 2-a-day PBEM for 6 players, where each person had 2 hours to play the save and pass it on to the next player. (I agree with Sulla that even numbers of players is the most balanced...but 6 players is best when all players can get early contact with one another so it doesn;t devolve into 2*(2v1))

2-a-day is very fast though, especially with quick speed, so if 1-a-day is OK, then time zone dependant it should be possible to design a timetable around that if people wanted.

If Sullla wants to play, he could make one map, and I'd be willing to make the map for the other game...

Sorry, I misspoke and Krill is right. I propose a 10-player Pitboss game with a 12 hour timer rather than a PBEM game. I think it will allow a lot more play time and flexibility while letting the turns tick by just as quickly.

Or - and I expect this to get shot down quickly - could just play simul turns with a 24 hour timer.

(one note, I can't connect to pitboss games from uni unless the host uses hamachi, which I'm sure sunrise would really love to use wink)

Well I don't want shoot it down. My proposal, which continues to be poorly articulated, is a 12-hour simultaneous turn Pitboss game. All the speed of a 2-a-day PBEM with twice as many players and 12 hours to play rather than 2.

If I set up a second PC just to host the Pitboss game I'm happy to use Hamachi Krill...there won't be any issues if we've passworded our civs, will there?

Bonus to using Pitboss: lurkers can log in and look at the games if we provide the passwords in our private thread.

I am interested depending on the type of game you settle on.

I'd play a pitboss game with a turn each day (aka sunrise's proposal but with 24 hr turns), but more frequent turn limit or a democracy type game or a pbem I don't think I'd have time for.

Well here's the thing - the 5 guys in the PBEM game say they are running 10-12 turns per week. I wouldn't really want to go much slower than that...if the game takes half again as long to finish due to 7 turns per week then I'd be tempted to play a 5-player PBEM game instead.

But with Pitboss you can take as much or as little time every 12 hours as you want. Playing twice a day isn't easy, but one long play session should easily let you queue your units up to move during the second turn of the day.

Plus we all see the Pitboss timer moves slower than in real life, by about 25%. So there are a few more hours to play already.

Anyways, while I favor a 2-turn-per-day Pitboss game, I think Pitboss period is clearly superior to PBEM.

Problem with 12 hours is that alot of people do find it difficult to find the time; for instance I work 12:30 hour shifts when not in uni, and have travelling time on top of that and hygiene etc, so realistically I'd only be able to login 15 hours apart. The turn would have to rollover at fairly specific time intevals for me to play in a 12 hour game. It's doable...but would have to be adjusted.

I've never played pitboss, so am I right in thinking that if you do not log in for a turn period at all but in your previous turn period you set some units on goto, set a research goal and filled your build queues, those actions will be applied in your absence and the game won't be held up?
