How many people on this site play(ed) Alpha Centauri? I've kind of had it in the back of my mind to ask if people would be interested in an Alpha Centauri PbEM at some point. (I am aware of the Planetfall mod for Civ IV, but I am interested in playing the original game, and Planetfall won't work on my Mac anyway.) I am an Alpha Centauri newb (though Transcend doesn't seem that hard), and while I know some of the mechanics are clunky compared to Civ IV, the setting is just ... so cool.
Sorry, I hope you don't mind this momentary derailment, T-hawk.

Alpha Centauri talk is never a derailment in my demesne. Yes, the setting and philosophy are wonderful, on top of a strategy game that was amazing at the time and still holds up even now. This podcast is required listening, basically Brian Reynolds talking about SMAC for an hour. http://flashofsteel.com/index.php/2011/0...auri-show/
As for a SMAC PBEM or succession game, talk comes up here every now and then but it hasn't materialized. I'm not looking to play myself but I'd very closely read along with one.

Yeah, I've played SMAC. It was a great game for its time but there are some very serious flaws and playing it competitively would lead to a lot of problems or require a lot of banning.

Every time I say I'm done with this game, I'm lying.

Nitpick: Askia -> Songhai, not Siamese.

Rationalism completing slower was also partially because of the lack of culture ruin pops.

I much prefer that strategic view overview picture than your previous ones. The other ones are far too cluttered by the overly busy graphics. But this picture is too small to read the city names easily, which is annoying.

Noble, even your compliments have nitpicks. Truly, you have a gift.
