Civilization 5 Announced

Quote:"...we've delivered another great Civ game."
Uh, sure. And the Titanic still floats.

Sullla Wrote:By the way, are you guys aware that Realms Beyond now has about as much forum traffic as Apolyton? It's true. We've come so far from when RBCiv consisted of 8-10 people setting up shop in the summer of 2002. Just think how active we'd be if Civ5 had actually been good!
Really? Are you talking in terms of thread views, post rate, or something else? Would be interested to see the actual numbers.

Yeah, it was kind of funny. The other day I got one of those mini-steam pop-ups telling me Civ5 had been updated. The last time that happened I thought - "Hmm, must've been a patch, I should go check the CFC thread just for grins." This time I thought - "Damn, I really need to remember to uninstall that."

Kind of sad what Apolyton turned into - when Civ 4 came out, Poly was my introduction to the world of Civ websites (I played I, II, and III, but only in my own little world.) I still remember some guy playing Rome and espousing the wonders of the CS slingshot (this was OOB-Vanilla of course, before the chopping nerf and the introduction of the additional pre-req.) Course, I can't shed too many tears, I found CFC about a week later and I couldn't even tell you my Apolyton password. For that matter, I only check CFC about once a month these days, this community is really the only link I need to Civ, since there won't be anything new coming around for Civ4 and Civ5 is such a train-wreck.
I've got some dirt on my shoulder, can you brush it off for me?

Before readings what Sullla has had to say about Apolyton I would have guessed they were at least two orders of magnitude larger than RB. Amazing that they're now, at least based on what Sullla says, reduced to the size of a little 'ol niche site wink

I think Apolyton hit its peak with Civ 2, and has been losing ground ever since. Splitting the already small community in two (with WePlayCiv.com) was probably the last nail in the coffin.

Apolyton lost most of its traffic back in 2009 when Rob Worham and the other original admins pulled out to establish WePlayCiv.com instead. Civ 5 wasn't the cause of Poly's depopulation, although it could be said that it failed to be a solution. (Ha, crosspost with DaveV.) IMO, Apolyton's peak period was Alpha Centauri; it far outshone CFC and any other sites with a dribble of traffic for that game.

Highest traffic was with PTW and start of C3C. Couple of hundred regular posters just in the civ 3 sections in those days. There is a lot of animosity between Poly and Panda****ers because Dale issued death threats to one of hte posters he didn't like and started deleting posts after being given a few admin powers. And the some of the old admins refused to do anything about it...luckily Poly got rid of most of the simply nasty posters there.

It's been dropping for the past 7-8 years. The only thing interesting over there now is the Off Topic, and has been since about 2006.

Maybe, but the vast majority of those were in the General forum posting "Civ 3 sucks!" and "No it doesn't". Apolyton University (kind of a Realms Beyond community within the larger community) never had more than a dozen or so regular posters.

(Apologies to all if someone has already linked these two things and I missed them, but...)

Irony:

Yep, it took ~19 days from when Sirian typed that to when Sullla linked to that image.

Good thing those guys working to remove those strategically dead (cough...FFHPBEM1...cough) SODs drew from the example of ICS, a strategy completely and totally eliminated from the franchise.

On the bright side: 1) I can now quote Sirian as saying the Civ5 design team was "lax." 2) I have my nominee for the QOTM thread.

On the down side: 1) I spent $50 on this crud.

Well if they were trying to get rid of SoD (Stacks of Death right?) they did get rid of them for the human with the HUGE maintanence for them I rarely find myself with an army that has 1 unit per city although with one of the more recent patchs I could.

I should point out that most of the members who left Apolyton during Civ4 and then Civ5 did not go to other sites. They just dropped the series...Lots of players really don't like City Upkeep and not being able to break deals as a few examples.
