Might be a bit more complex with unrestricted... though you could do separate ones for leaders and civs?
Hmm ....
I like the Snake Pick idea (even if it does take a week), although this might work as well, I suppose.
I do have an idea of what I would *like* to play, and any control I may have over the process I would be eager to latch upon. And more control over the set up would, imho, make the game feel slightly more deterministic. And yes, picks before the map is even made plz xD ... (or well, I dont rly care, but picks before the map is fine with me)

However, given that starting techs don't really matter any more (or you could say that if you don't start with Fishing you won't get seafood), there's no reason players couldn't start the snakepick before seeing starts.
Personally I don't care much what I play. I don't care if things get tweaked along the lines of someone can get IND or you don't play something you played the in the last three PB (unless you want to, of course).
A week? The snake pick for PB25 took a week and that was only *9* players...

So as long as people try and hold to the 'Don't be a jerk' rule by also saying 'don't use the banter thread seedily', and agree to not get bent out of shape if something is posted there accidentally, it would be okay.
That'd be fine, but what happens when someone slips and does it anyways a year+ from now?

I'd certainly hope so, although we're running close to 18 months on that game now. If you mean turn-wise, I'd expect a game as large as PB27 to reach the end-game; PB13 and PB22 were smaller games and they both did.

I mean, I'm assuming we can go back to the consistent 24 hour timer, especially if we are much stricter about lurkers playing turns, and keep it at that length longer (since we have fewer players and less land to manage ~200 turns in).

Yeah turn per day needs to be adhered to.
On map size...PB18 has some weird variance in area available to different players. Probably not best to use that as an example of map size. Toroidal also has a large effect on the perceived size of the map.
