Hi,
Sirian Wrote:OK, Pirates is fun. Aye. ![]() ![]() Quote:So... Apparently I can handle Rogue level (next to highest) on Day Two. Yep, ditto over here. At first I was a bit disappointed about the level of difficulty, then found out that the highest level is more challenging, especially when it comes to sword fighting when you're getting older. ![]() ![]() Fortunately, I have a very good feeling for rhythms and for music in general, so my love-life isn't in danger at swashbuckler level... ![]() Let's see how you will do on swashbuckler level. And if you ever manage to enter an Indian War Canoe, please let me know how you did it - I'd love to zip around in one of those. Bah, who needs a Ship of the Line? ![]() What I'm really angry about though is once again, the (lack of) support for foreign languages. Normally, I'm buying the US/UK versions of computer games because most translations into German are horrible. Unfortunately, I have to pay *a lot* more for them, and normally get them only weeks later than if I had bought the German version. With Pirates!, I would have had to pay 20 Euros more for the US version - ridiculous! So I thought hey, it's not that text-heavy a game, so let's finally buy a German translation again, can't go wrong, can it? Hah, so now Firaxis has a 1.01 patch published for some months now - for US version only. Granted, the game runs fine without the patch, which adresses only minor issues, but still - I feel treated badly as a non-US customer. As far as I know, Germany is the second biggest (or even biggest?) market for PC games in the world, and yet time and again we get bad translations, no patches, worse or even no support... ![]() For civ4, it looks like I have to hunt for the original US version again, even if this means I will get it several weeks later than the rest while paying 25% more money for it... Really makes one think of pirating games again... Arrrr! :aar: -Kylearan

Hi,
Occhidiangela Wrote:He can't save the game. It simply won't, all he gets when he tries to save isStrange. Pirates! savegames are stored in the "my documents" folder, so there shouldn't be any problems with access rights or anything like this. They are only 1MB of size, so not enough hard drive space shouldn't be the problem either. Have you installed the game with admin rights, or as a user with limited access rights? (Can't remember if that is possible at all, but some games have trouble if you install them with limited rights) Maybe somehow the My Documents\My Games folder got corrupted somehow, so maybe try to delete the My Dociments\My Games\Sid Meier's Pirates! folder and try again? -Kylearan

Sure enough, it works now. I just read your post, great minds think alike. I hadn't realized he installed it on a limited rights proflie. Thanks. Occhi

Hi,
Lurker Wyrm Wrote:Any way to change that? The game looks interesting enough that I might get it, but I utterly despise saving to the My Documents folder. No, I don't think you can change this. And from a developer's view, this makes sense: Several people can play the game on the same computer, and their savegames and settings shouldn't interfere with each other. This shouldn't prevent you from playing it though, as it's a really fine game. I'm sure after I've seen Pirates of the Caribbean 2, I'll come back to it again myself. ![]() -Kylearan

That being said, if a game is good enough (like this one appears to be), I'll bite the bs and just play it, although once I finish it ain't gonna hang around afterwards, it'll get removed as soon as I'm done with it.

So I'm this guy, but I finally got around to playing Pirates! :aar:
I just finished my first game, going up to Rogue difficulty. Seemed plenty easy to me, just like for Sirian and Kylearan above. My pirate did get enough gold to be able to sail forever. (I knew of the loophole, didn't explicitly try for it, but ended up there after getting Montalban and all four lost cities for 300K total.) But like Sirian said in another thread, you can sail forever but when the fame points are completed then there's nothing else left to do. I even nabbed a Ship of the Line when one just happened to spawn near me out of the blue. So what variant material is there for this game? Unlike Civ, where you can win without cottages or resources or Alphabet or whatever, Pirates requires playing the entire game. You must kill things for promotions, must swordfight for pretty much everything, must dance to get clues for Montalban and Raymondo. Can't think of much for alternate goals either; one common one is to turn the entire map Dutch or whatever, but that sounds more tedious than fun. Picking a particular weak ship might be variant material, but the problem with that is one lost battle or swordfight means bye bye variant (or reload a save.) It'll be worth another playthrough or two on the top difficulty, and to try a few of the era and skill options. But anyone got any more interesting things to try? ![]() |
