It depends on how much you plan to grow before starting another worker/settler.

If you're staying at size 1 for now (i.e. starting another worker/settler immediately) I would expect the gold to be better, since you'll have the rice up by the time you want to start growing anyway.

If you're growing to size 2, it turns out in this case that improving gold before rice only makes the growth one turn slower. Whether it's worth it or not depends on how high you want to prioritize commerce.

If you're planning to grow all the way to size 3 or higher the general rule of focusing on food first will guide you true.

I'm no expert but I think more food would be better to advance your early growth curve.

You should almost always prioritize food first, then commerce. As SevenSpirits said, the only way I could think of mining the gold over the rice would be if you're not planning on growing at all.

Thanks for that. I think I want to get out another worker ASAP to chop out a settler, since my capital doesn't have great growth potential with just the one food resource, and it's only rice (fortunately wet). Then settle either the plains cow + fish (2S of the plains cow) to my south, or the wet wheat to the north (need to explore that area a bit, warrior will head there after checking out east of the eastern lake).

My warrior is standing on the planned fish city site to the south.

Only known source of copper is in the desert to my south east.

I popped gold from the northern hut.

The only hard part will actually be building the Moai smile

But seriously, the city can only reach a maximum potential of 3hpt, provided the grassland forest is not chopped right off the bat (unless there is something of note on the tile covered by the interface) That being said...I concur. I mean, damn, that is a sexy location - 14 water tiles, with the potential for a 15 food surplus working all the lake tiles, wheat, and pigs yikes

Do you have any stone around?

No stone unfortunately. I'm thinking my city over there might go 1N of the pig so I at least have the plains hill to build Moai in the first place. Especially if I don't have stone.
