Bingo, that put a finger on what I couldn't quite describe. Meeting AI leaders is not interesting. There's nothing to do at the moment of contact*, it doesn't matter what order you meet them, and we know what they look like, they're not worth a screen-filling picture each. That's what made the first parts of the report drag.
*This was something of a change from Civ 3, where it did matter very much whom and when you met, since every contact was a chance to score map and tech trades and brokerages and sales. It took me a little while to get out of the habit of chronicling that for Civ 4 reports.

Maybe the leader screenshots would be useful in a single Highslide that you could click on? Thanks for the comments ... some good ones in there. I like the suggestion about AI location - that is much more important that who they actually are (a Monty half a world away is different from a Monty next door).
I'll dig into this feature of highslide and see what I can get it to do for Civ4.

I just reworked the last page based on comments above. It should hang together a little better now and eases the reader into the 'drop off'.

No idea - It always works that way for me when I select unrestricted leader. It shows the AI leader and civ as random.
Maybe it's just a function of FfH then. Haven't really played BtS SP in a long time.
I finished the read about an hour later, no real change in the comments

"Eystein the Wise" refers to a BtS beta tester whose civ name was Willburn. During beta testing, several of us played a game against some of the developers, and beat up on them so badly, they decided to name Great Spies about us. You will find me in the game as "Speaker the Lionhearted" and should be able to find MookieNJ (Mark Swiss) in there as well. There may have been one or two more, I can't remember.

I think Gogf, Mookie, you and Willburn played the game. I sat in chat and listened to you beat them up. IIRC, that game was the reason why settler costs got broken in BtS: they disliked the pace of expansion to put it simply....
Current games (All): RtR: PB80 Civ 6: PBEM23
Ended games (Selection): BTS games: PB1, PB3, PBEM2, PBEM4, PBEM5B, PBEM50. RB mod games: PB5, PB15, PB27, PB37, PB42, PB46, PB71. FFH games: PBEMVII, PBEMXII. Civ 6: PBEM22 Games ded lurked: PB18

It was a modern or future or something late game era on TBG, and they had no idea how to play it. Settler costs were definitely too cheap in later eras, if you wanted to maintain similar pacing as an Ancient Era game, but I don't think that's what MP players wanted. They should have asked us before they made the change at the last second. The whole point of later era starts is that they get going faster, with more choices from T0. The devs didn't really understand that, coming from an SP mindset. Oh well. Future is pretty stupid now, but all the rest are still pretty playable.
I think this is the whole list of beta testers included as Great Spies in BtS:
Quote:Speaker the Lionhearted
Viktor Griph
Nolan Buonarroti (f)
Atlas Titanus
Foshaug the Deceiver
Joe Matise
Eystein the Wise
Daniel Cole
Max Gogf
Mark Swiss
