Go?

Ooh, I played a little bit back in high school and undergrad, I think I did okay. I never had some grand strategy, besides occupying the best positions as best I could. But I was pretty much self taught after playing and beating my dad.

I looked at my bookshelf after this thread started up, and Janice Kim's Learn To Play Go series was probably my favorite when I was getting started. I didn't switch over to things like Graded Go Problems for Beginners until after I started taking the game more seriously. The first book in the series is pretty much for people who don't know how to play. The second and third have the tactical-level information; I found them the most helpful. The fourth book goes up to strategy-level, and has less-specific advice.

Again, if anyone wants to do PBEM go, let me know. I'm rusty, but I think it would be fun to play a few slow-paced games.

I played back in high school, was a fun game. I seem to recall at least a few years ago there was a good online system with match making and the like where you can play games with people as well as watch games. Unfortunately don't remember the name but probably wouldn't be hard to find. It ranked people as they played so you were stuck blindly playing people out of your skill level.

I feel like it's one of those perfect learning curved games.

From a rules perspective, it's simple. However, the wide solution space, importance of localized tactics blending with grand strategy, and years of honing basic movements makes it truly amazing to try and comprehend and play at any competent level. Plus the astonishment of how single moves completely change things in subtle ways is something you really miss from a game like Chess. Plus, handicaps are way easier to implement.

As to the original question... there are a bunch of online places to play, but in terms of developing/learning I have no clue. I've been told the best is just to play, get a feel of what works and what doesn't, and pick up the theory after playing 50-100 games. Computer AIs are great for grinding this period. so, basically a lot like Civ.

Hey, we have a thread for this! Anything changed since then? I'm a somewhat active player and in my new job with no access to a desktop and all your fancy OpenGL games, would love to play more.

I used to play frequently in highschool against friends. Then I stopped when we scattered for college. It's actually something I would like to take up again. I am probably fairly rusty.
