Steam Power > Assembly Line, and Hunting/Mining are good starting techs.

Steam Power is technically researchable before Gunpowder. Or Guilds.

I first read krill's post as saying Steam Power and Assembly line were good starting techs.

Then I started thinking about it, they'd actually be pretty slow. Even midgame you'd have factories but no coal for coal plants.

But if you could stay in contention until rifling, pity the fools who oppose you...
