RB PBEM #1 - Gandhi [spoilers]

Dreylin and I have been chatting a bit but I am sure that you are seeing those chats over in Dreylin's thread. He did ask me about my chariot and the barb city but I think I ducked the question. I fully expect him to ask me again now that I have moved next to the city. My plan is to kill one warrior and then leave (+1 XPs).
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

sooooo and I are also arranging a bet on the Ashes

Quote:Sooooo,

Are you interested in a straight up 10g bet on the result of the first test? A draw would see the 10g carried over to the 2nd test.
Quote:Sure! We can make it 20 g if you like.

(quietly confident ...)
Quote:Ok ... how about ...

20g per test, draws carry forward to be decided by the next test.
30g on the overall result (waived if series is a tie)
20g for who ever wins / retains the ashes

Australia currently has the Ashes and if the series is a draw, they would retain them. The last time Australia played in England (2005), it was a truly fantastic series with every game really tight (after the first match where Australia lost their primary fast bowler / McGrath). England won the series and the Ashes for the first time since 1987/88 (series in Australia). England toured Australia (2007/07) and were thumbed 5-0 (the first ever whitewash in an Ashes series since 1920-21).

This year, Australia has lost a lot of greats (only 4 Australian players have played test cricket in England and one of them Brett Lee looks like he might miss the first test) but they are still the #1 test nation. The Ashes always brings out the best in both sides and I fully expect that everyone involved will play above themselves.

Quote:Hey that last one's not fair! I agree to the first two though.

Easiest 130 gold I ever made ...
Quote:I wondered if you see that. Don't you think England have a chance of winning the series?

Anyway - you are on!

a chat with Dreylin

Quote:me: I meant to buzz you about the trade request
9:40 AM Andy: np, I accepted
me: hopefully you pick up sailing and then we can complete our CoL Calendar deal
thx
Andy: You should be able to offer CoL/Calendar next turn
me: ok - will look for it
Andy: assuming athleteaccepts my request for Sailin
me: what are you currently teching? CS?
Andy: yep
9:41 AM me: ok, interested in trading Theology plus a beaker IOU?
Andy: sounds like mh got shafted
me: again?
how so?
Andy: let me think aout that
well by the HG/overflow
thng
me: oh - are you talking about the THG
personally, I think he mis-clicked and someone forwarded the wrong save
9:42 AM Andy: I agree
me: I have never seen that error in a PBEM game
Andy: (said as much in thethread)
me: best way to test it is to play a PBEM game (or a hotseat) by your self
Andy: He should have put a flag down on the re-play
to be certain he got the correct save back
9:44 AM I also got the next site he was aiming to settle
me: theology (500) v CS (800) is quite a stretch - one of the downsides of picking up a big tech
Andy: so he's probably a very unhappy bunny
me: really - you participating in a land grab at the moment
Andy: Yep
Hoing off on buildings until I get intoOrgRel
me: I must check how many cities everyone has when it gets back to me
Andy: so building Settlers, Workers & Military
me: fair enough
Andy: Think it' about 4-each
9:45 AM (maybe only three for mh)
me: BTW: sooooo and I have a side bet (to be settled with civ4 gold) regarding the ashes
Andy: Hehe
About ho badly England will lose? wink
me: no - its straight up
no odds given or asked
9:46 AM Andy: Small sum though, rigt?
me: 20g per test, 30g on the series
Andy: ooooo
me: so, if someone wins 5-0 ... that is 130g
which is actually a fair bit - but fun
Andy: That should be a nice little earner for you
me: I hope so
9:47 AM actually - if sooooo is playing a SE, then gold will be harder to come by for him
than a cottage economy
Andy: True
me: anyway - think about theology / CS and what else you would need
I will be asking for a NO BUILD AP restriction too
9:48 AM Andy: What about HS?
me: HS?
Andy: Hagia Sofia
me: oh
9:49 AM note for future: must not trade to Sooooo
don't care
don't want him landing another GE wonder
Andy: Yeah
me: thx for reminding me
must tread carefully with that one
9:50 AM Andy: I'm probably going to hold off trading CS to most people
- at least until they can pay nearly full-price
9:51 AM BTW, that would raise your debt to 350b
wink
me: how long until you have it? where are you going next?
Andy: ~5t, I think
Currency helped
me: yeah
9:52 AM Andy: still thinking about where next
(will need to save some gold)
me: oh really - starting to run into expense issues?
Andy: I'm guessing that sooooo will either go Construction or Music
9:53 AM may make a run for Music if he doesn't
me: we are ripping up this tech tree
Andy: Quick, plus cooperative research / trading
Some expense issues
spammingcities out will have that effect
me: yes
9:54 AM btw - how many workers do you have?
Andy: also nearing the end of my Hut gold stash
me: I have 5 at the moment
I only landed about 80g from huts
and only got about 4 or 5 of them
9:55 AM Andy: Yeah, but you're probably still in +ve gold from your GP
me: no, small negative
Andy: Wait, we both have Currency now
me: only 3 cities - soon to be 5
Andy: so gold can be exchanged instead of IOUs
me: yeah - I think I had close to the highest gold
oh - true
what is a suitable exchange rate?
Andy: iirc we had about the same
me: 50ish?
9:56 AM Andy: 50ish = what?
me: how much gold we both had / have
what is a suiltable beaker / gold exchange rate?
Andy: more like 75
don't know
we're talking in Normal beakers
me: any suggestions regarding working it out?
Andy: but the game is Quick
9:57 AM me: how about this ...
9:58 AM if you can research 500 (normal) beakers in 10 turns, and that costs you 10g per turn (100g in total), then does that mean that 500b = 100g?
I would think that is a bit light
Andy: It seems like it
me: but I don't think that 500b = 500g
Andy: cetainly not
9:59 AM me: sell 1 tech and you can research flat out for 50 turns
lets throw this out to the group and see if we can reach a consensus
have meeting - got to run
Andy: Of couse it also changes based on the gold / beaker multipliers in your cities
OK
chat later

So - Lurkers one and all ... what is the appropriate gold value per beaker of tech? I want to trade theology (500) v CS (800) and I already have an IOU with Dreylin for 50b. That represents 350b. I can either research CS myself (how much gold will that take?) or I can throw in some gold to even out the trade.

Well, Dreylin won't like it too much, but gold is more valuable than beakers.

With sensible MM, set your civilization to 100% research, and note the bpt and gpt.
Then do the same, but with 0% research. This tells you the rate (or close enough) that you convert gold into visible beakers.

Then you can apply a 20% prerequisite bonus to the # of beakers.

e.g. You make 300bpt, -150gpt at 100%, and 50bpt, 50 gpt at 0% research.

Then each turn at 100% research converts 200 gold into 250 visible beakers. After applying the prerequisite bonus, 200 gold is worth 250*1.2=300 beakers in a tech in this example.

I didn't answer his worker question, nor do I know what 'shotgunned' a tech means. I looked at the game today and I will look at feudalism after Theology.
Declaring which tech you're going to research next to line up trade partners early. Funny a Brit knows this and not an Aussie/American smile http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riding_shot...ng_shotgun

Actually the value of a gold varies between players, and for each player it can vary depending on how the beakers are generated. The simplist way is to note how many beakers you make at max science, and how fast you research at breakeven. If 50 gold lets you research for 2 turns at 100% and make an extra 150 beakers compared to breakeven for those 2 turns, then each gold is worth 3 beakers to you. Other players may disagree with that valuation, so you are still going to be stuck haggling...

ZPV shows an alternate way of doing it. The prerequisite bonus "should" be taken into account as well manually.

Strictly speaking though you shoudl reverse the calculation because you owe beakers. I'd expect, at this stage of the game that you owe something in the region of 175 gold for 350 (normal speed) beakers.

I've heard of riding shotgun and calling shotgun but mainly as to using / claiming the front seat. Interesting that it also means 'support'.
