[SPOILERS] Novice's nominal nonchalance

All the city ruins nicely add to the sense of violence here.

Serdoa got land points, settled a new city (9 land tiles) and grew one of his size 2 cities to size 3. He also got a tech, I'm putting that down as Writing. And 5k or 7k of units (something + an archer, I'd guess).

Seven settled a new city (6 land tiles).

Nicolae grew his capital to size 5 & built a Warrior.

Mackoti got either 2k or 4k of units.

I've been looking at what techs to get. I think I need writing first to be able to tech anything with my busted economy. Then I want
  • Currency
  • Code of Laws
  • Missionaries, ideally through Monotheism but possibly through Meditation
  • Fishing-Sailing-Calendar

I was also toying with the idea of using some of my excess production for TGLH. Although honestly I think Seven or Serdoa will beat me to it even if I beeline it.

Calendar would be great for happiness, I can hook up all 5 calendar resources without Iron Working. Currency would be a generic boost, and CoL would give my cities something useful to build, plus it would let me run Caste System. Masonry enables Monotheism, Hammam's at Mathematics, and TGLH at Sailing.

Tentative plan is to tech Writing and save gold while teching Masonry using specialists. My first Great Scientist could possibly bulb Mathematics (yes, my economy is that pathetic...) and allow me to build Hammams while teching one of the expensive C techs (probably Calendar). Since Masonry will complete before my first GP, I can pick up Monotheism as well, or either Fishing-Sailing or Priesthood.

Calendar looks very good here so it's a pity that I will be beaten to the tech by a mile even if I bulb Mathematics. I really misplayed my opening here by not paying more attention to the costs and tech pace on this map and map type.
I have to run.

Played turn 45.

Our effective modifier on Writing indicates that three players have it already. Does that match your c&d, Pling?

We have a warrior trying to defog the last unknown area of the map. Here's what we think we know currently.

There's a chance the gold is on an island, which would make TGLH more attractive.

Oh and Mackoti's Grumpy scout turned up south of Beach Ball. I positioned a spear and a warrior to whack it if it ventures any closer.

I only had Seven & Serdoa down as having Writing, but there were definite guesses for the other two so I'll have a look when I'm next at a pc and reassign one of those smile

Bit too much of a pain to do on my phone tho frown

We've played a few turns over the weekend but I haven't had time to report.

On turn 47 my warrior revealed water to my southeast, so the unknown area of the map is actually shaped something like this:

I'm dispatching one of my 2 warriors in Backrush to scout northwest from that city, to find out what the southern approach to this unknown area looks like.

The warrior set out on turn 48, and at eot48 the borders in Backrush expanded as well, although this didn't reveal anything I didn't already know. Backrush has been building a worker while the monument did its thing - this worker will now farm the wheat while Backrush builds its granary working the copper. After a terribly slow start it will soon be a decent city.

I'll settle a gems city on t50, defended by an axe+spear. You can see the location marked with a sign in the right edge of the screenshot above. Also, on turn 48 I noticed this:

Mackoti's not in slavery. That's odd. Maybe Mackoti's cousin is not as good as the real thing.

Speaking of oddities, can anybody tell me why Automated Carpatiae has a worker on this snow tile?

Finally, Serdoa got his first Great Prophet this turn. The contest for victory is between Serdoa and Seven now, I'd say. I'm happy to play along though, with the general disclaimer that my opening sucked, so I will only fall further behind as the other players' snowballs gain momentum. smile

Automated Teller is taking over for Nicolae Carpatiae.

Forgot to mention, Mackoti did venture closer with his scout, and I did whack it with my spear.
