Turn 060

Called it: horses at Clinton.

TBS retreated both warriors. Clearly he's reading this thread and saw that continuing on this path would only lead to our mutual destruction. /s

I haven't looked at the game yet, but from civ stats I can see TBS just settled his 5th city.

I already know where it is... rolleye

Turn 061

TBS just took the last only bit of food near my copper.

Kefka, what do you think about this map?

Drumpf, your opinion?

Seems about right.

What ? I see a sugar 2SW of your copper, that's food enough for you 'mericans !
Reply

Yeah, but the sugar is buried in jungle, and that's just too much work for us lazy 'Mericans to get at.

The problem is compounded because we need it to be defensible - he's going to have Impi mind you, and they are going to invade us. (Why wouldn't he invade us? He knows he has our copper in a vice and can pillage it the first turn of any war.)

I have three ideas for the copper city, but maybe scooter can think of something else, because as is the recurring theme with this game, I don't like any of the options I see.

1. Settle the originally planned city

Positives:
+ Grants us sight inside TBS's border city
+ Plains hill plant
+ Stonehenge culture will make him commit hammers to culture in this city
+ Defensible location; after border pop it will be impossible for him to hit the city out of the fog

Negatives:
- No first ring food
- Copper is second ring, requiring us to wait 10 turns before we can begin hooking it up
- Only safe food source is second ring and jungled, so Iron Working would have to be priority
- Only makes sense as a location if we want to try and fight TBS culturally for the seafood and 2nd sugar tile

2. Settle between copper and sugar

Positives:
+ Copper first ring, easier to hook up and easier to defend
+ Will be able to farm grassland tile when

Negatives:
- A lot of the same as above: need Iron Working to really make use of that sugar
- One tile off the coast; feels like this spot is giving up on contesting anything in the region

3. Settle SE of the copper, where the archer is now

Postiives:
+ Copper first ring
+ Farmable grassland first ring
+ Blocks off access to the ivory, and potentially lets us extend our land claiming to the northeast
+ Very defensive city location, as any attacks would have to come across a river
+ On border pop it gets the peak tile under culture, giving us extended sight to the north and more warning of any attack.

Negatives:
- Horrible growth curve. Not a long term city at all
- Doesn't contest any tiles from TBS' city
- If I were to want to settle the originally spot (Option #1 above), these cities would be forkable to impi.

Any other ideas? Settler is due out in 2 turns.

There is no way you can contest the fish and sugar, it's first ring for him. That's just wishful thinking.

You could try 2S of copper and then rushing another city in the region of NE of the copper. The latter part might be wishful thinking too.

The lesson to learn here is not to play on a map designed or specified by Commodore.

Actually, how about due south of the copper? Sure, it sucks because there's no grassland to farm for 10 turns, but later on it will be able to take the sugar over and actually be a half-decent city. So in the short term it primarly is about getting the Copper worked, and then later it can work the copper, sugar, farmed grassland, and 5 hills for 20hpt.

Wow, this is ridiculous. I think he's going to get away with it too because aggressive Impis. Not to mention terrain that favors impis. I don't know what you're supposed to do though. Your land is absolute garbarge, and he just cut off the only immediately settle-able 6F tile we've found AND is explicitly threatening your only source of copper on the heels of going out of his way to threaten your settler. I'm on board with making longterm goals to ruin his game if yours ends up getting spoiled here because of this. Does he have copper hooked yet?

You could always go sailing down south and hope you find nice land in the islands, but it's just that - hoping. Ok yes you definitely should do that anyway because of trade routes, but you know what I mean.

As for where in the world to put the city... I'm not sure what you mean about 1S of copper being unable to farm grassland for 10T since it would have access to the one next to the copper. I like the idea of getting that peak tile to work for you in terms of visibility.

Longterm, I have no idea what to do here other than try to mess up TBS eventually. He's not really given you much choice.

Turn 062

Well, TBS may in fact be gearing up for an impi attack. He's keeping his warrior on top of the that hill north of our copper, twisting the knife that the mapmaker stabbed in our back.

Also, can the barbs please leave us alone now? Go pick on some other team for once.

I finished my chops this turn and our settler will finish at end of turn. Unfortunately the worker road turns don't quite line up so we're not going to be able to plant the city until turn 65.

You're missing the obvious counter: tech Iron Working, Feudalism, and Machinery, and then our Guerilla 2 crossbows will be the natural counter to his impi! bang

No idea on if he has copper yet; we don't have a connection and probably won't have one for some time.

Settled city #4 this turn:

This wonderful spot cost me 6gpt to settle. Enough that I turned the slider back down to max tax for another turn. I really need to get more worker-turns down here, so Bush is going to whip out that worker and then build a galley. Overseas is pretty much our only chance, so I guess I should be happy that it's at least an option.

With our luck we'll find our southern neighbor there.
