Anyone here make homemade ice-cream? Its a holiday tradition at my grandparents house. They currently have an older model White Mountain Electric ice-cream maker, and i attempted to buy them a new one as theirs was starting to get a little worse-for-wear.. WELL, I found a couple different websites that had them for about 96$. Turns out, they were all scammy websites as the NORMAL price of these things in the condition i was looking for is around 250-400$. YEP. So, i am disputing it with Paypal. SO SO SOOOOOOOOO glad i used Paypal over just entering in my debit. Dont know how it is for others outside of the USA, but here the bank dont give a crap if you volunteered your money away.
So, That along with having a seizure and being off work cuz i can barely move... Hows everyone else doing?

I've made ice cream with frozen nitrogen before but that was just a fun gimmick at a university event. How does a home kitchen model work, does it have a built-in compressor or does it sit inside your freezer?

Uses a metal cylinder filled with your icecream materials closed, and either a hand-crank or electric motor rotates a mixer inside. That cylinder sits in a bed of ice + rock salt to keep everything nice and cold and it churns for 20-40min roughly.
This is the one i bought for my grandparents since the other one was off a scam website (and a much higher quality brand)

Did they have it in stock in store or did you have to order it online?
Because I was literally struggling for a gift idea for my dad and this is a GREAT idea. We used to make homemade ice cream back in his hometown and it remains some of the best stuff I've ever tasted.

I ordered the Home Depot one online (and the scam one)
My grandparents have been making homemade icecream for the holidays every year for the past 40 years or so. Grandpa uses a 6 qt and Grandma makes her slightly healthier/not vanilla ones individually. I dont know this brand or really any other brand other than White Mountain... and finding one that isnt a scam is going to be 300$+ So, ill settle with this one.

I'm about to be on holidays so home made ice cream could be a treat. Do you find it tastes noticeably better/worse than store bought, or about the same?

It all depends on how much sugar u add/ect.. From my own experiences, by itself homemade icecream is generally better. If you like to add toppings/chocolate syrup, id go with your standard store bought. Basically, Store bought is going to be thicker/creamy while homemade at least in my experience will be more liquidy. Might be just the timing of it all. We tend to make it and then dig in, we dont usually set the Vanilla (grandpa's version) in the freezer while grandma's various flavored ones she makes get set in the freezer and thus end up thicker/creamy. I highly recommend making sure you use REAL vanilla. (we import Mexican vanilla) Its a much better product than the imitation. Buying and shipping the Mexican vanilla is actually still cheaper than buying the equivalent amount of real vanilla here... lol.

Pretty much anywhere I eat ice cream I do toppings. Home made is the exception. Just vanilla.

Interesting, I don't think I've ever done toppings on my ice cream.
