Which medium-term tech path should we follow? We have a long-term goal of Communism, and a side goal of Rifling. Counting only the techs we don't know, each goal would require the following:
Communism (5040): Scientific Method (4320) Printing Press (2880) Alphabet (540) Chemistry (3240) OR Astronomy (3600)* Engineering (1800) Gunpowder (2160) * I assume we will go via the Chemistry line, so skip the Astronomy line. Rifling (4320) Gunpowder (2160) Replaceable Parts (3240) Banking (1260) Printing Press (2880) Alphabet (540) The cost of Communism is 19,980b, though some techs will be heavily discounted (Gunpowder, Alphabet). The total cost of Rifling is 14,400b, the unique cost is "only" 8,820b (ie the cost of the techs needed for Rifling that aren't required for Communism). So we definitely want to get Alphabet and Printing Press soon. But I think we need to explore the need for an early Banking as well. Printing Press would cost 3,420b, and would add an instant 40 commerce per turn (at minimum). Banking would cost 1,260b, and estimate that it would take us 10t to get a bank in Mansa's Muse, and that it'd be worth 20gpt. Lets put our current breakeven research rate at 300bpt, meaning it would take us 6t longer to get to Printing Press compared to Banking, but then we'd get an instant bonus that is greater than the gain from a bank in Mansa's Muse. Ie, I think our next short-term tech path should be Alphabet > Printing Press. Then follow up with Gunpowder and possibly Engineering. We can skip the bank in Mansa's Muse for now, and build a grocer instead, and the city will also need a university anyway.

Engineering is the next tech. This is not really up for debate; we need the road movement to conduct the German war in speedy fashion.
After we get Engineering, we can decide whether we need Gunpowder next for drafted muskets or if we can go for a more economic path like Alphabet/Printing Press. Trying to argue for Communism or Rifling beeline at this point is not really useful, as we'll have to make the decision depending on the global situation down the road, which is impossible to know at the moment. We'll decide that in due time depending on what CFC and other teams do.
Probably we should stick to the communism plan over rifling. Engineering needs to be the next tech, then alphabet and printing press. Evaluate after that, but I think gunpowder should wait until we have printing press because muskets won't be ready for the next war.
We'll probably have just completed our second draft cycle right when we can get Gunpowder anyway, no? So we can probably get PP first and then Gunpowder.

I was going to post this in the turn thread but I think it's more appropriate here.
Here's what I think we should do, in general, over the next 20-30 turns. We're probably going to get DOWed by at least CFC and probably CivPlayers too. But I don't think we should divert our general plan over that. Slaving everything for troops up to a T175 date will harm us in the long run. I expect the T175 war to be very long and attritional. It will probably be a defensive war on our part. The most important thing is to keep up in tech on those two teams. With tech parity, we shouldn't lose many, if any, cities. Even if fighting riflemen. They'll be dealing with a lot of war weariness if we can keep hold of brick by brick. In my opinion, we should stick to the bottom of the tech tree and leave replacable parts, banking and rifling until later. That's the best long term option and IMO we should stick to it. Keep thinking long term! It's what has got us into No1 position so far. Let CFC and others race to rifling while we get the great people from communism and physics. We can pick up the techs for grenadiers, curassiers, cannon etc while we're down there if we need to, but that's a decision that can wait until we've got gunpowder and printing press. The main thing I want to emphasise is economy. We need to keep it strong, despite the diplomacy thread and visions of impending doom. Keep city specialisation. Keep the cottage cities growing and whipping economic buildings when they run out of good tiles to work or are at the happy cap. Properly develop our production cities - get Cutting Edge up to working only farms and mines. Build the road from Seven Tribes to Brick by Brick. Our knights we have in current production, and the ones we will make from our heroic epic city and BbB, will be fine for the german war. The Germans are weak and their axe/cat army will fall quickly to knights and macemen - have confidence! Losing troops is not even that terrible - macemen and, to a lesser extent, knights will be suboptimal by T175 and will still be costing troop maintenence.
That's a great plan in theory, but if CFC techs to Rifling and begins sending rifles and cavalry, we are going to need those units ourselves to defend. Believe me, I'd love to beeline Communism as well, just not sure if it's going to be possible. The good news is that we have a lot of in-game turns (and months of real-world time) before we have to make any decisions.
