The city was only recently founded, so, eh... 7
However, even if he does eat up the chariots, it's a net positive at least in a bilateral sense -- he will now have to build a 100h settler now, rather than get some free XP and a city. At the same time our alternative cost is actually lowish, our next best use for these units is to defend against a potential retep attack, which is a) potential; b) mostly chariot and HA driven itself. If the barb wasn't so perfectly positioned for the Inca dotmap, I don't think I would have bothered, but in this case I was semi-resigned to the possibility of losing the chariots by the end of this engagement.

Happened to be online when William was taking his turn, and this is hilarious:
So sure enough, William made me pay for the tactical fuck up, his chasing chariot caught up and attached, my C2 chariot at 1.3 health defended and lost. Unfortunately for William, that victory was as Pyrrhic as mine over the barb city, his attacking chariot, which previously blocked my return route itself got beatdown to 1.3. My other chariot, whilst also at 1.3 is at the same time at 2/2 XP, so will regain 1.8 strength and gain C1 as I promote -- William had to hose it down or lose his own and... his other chariot was one move short of being able to attack. Now, his second will never catch up with mine as it returns home. In other news,
Sure looks like retep is going to road and sack the Barber of Seville next turn! :D He also offered me a map trade. AI Diplo NAP for the win.

Pindicooter's Vikings have found us and declared war on retep too. So, Galley, I assume. Sailable connection to the west, but evidently quite a distant one. All suits me just fine (Cothon IC trade routes!). Offered a map trade to them -- via trading with Ichabod we already have the map discovered up to Lewwyn, who is on a landmass so far east that there is a good chance it's the one pindicooter are on, or at least have knowledge of. So, this gives us a 50% shot at proving the world is round with no effort at all. Of course, they probably won't trade for exactly this reason, but actually they have no other way of getting circumnavigation quickly either. Not sure about the Greeks though, they might well snatch it.

They found us and then declared on retep, or were already at war with retep when we found them? Why would they declare war--just being opportunistic? Who else have they met?

They haven't met anyone else from our continent, indeed there is no space for them to be on it, so I assume they sailed in from the west. So I guess the war declaration is simply to get their exploring vessel through retep's waters. If I understand the mechanics correctly, they found us first, and then declared on retep -- at least we received notice of a war declaration in the chat log.

William brought another chariot onto the scene, cutting off the retreat, and my spear was one tile short of being able to provide protection. The only way to avoid a 2 on 1 pile was to sidestep and suicide at 12.5% odds (8.8% retreat), which isn't actually so bad, 1 in 5 survival chance, but the chariot died without inflicting a single hit. Meh, lost two obsolete units to kill one obsolete unit and deny Inca a free city -- I'll take that trade. And let's not forget the 7 gold! Still, two tactical fuck-ups, that's not boding well, need to pay more attention.
Hopefully retep is attacking this turn.

I'm still hanging at rival average, a lot of infra is queued up -- within four turns i will get a library, a lighthouse, a granary and a city in various parts of the empire.

6 axemen, 7 chariots, 3 spears and an archer. That's retep's stack and I guess he is inviting me to take his cities, whilst that's away with Inca. Will see what I can do.
